I'd like to say that maybe people just didn't know any better. I mean, who really pays that much attention to an attorney general's primary?

But on the other hand, it's a damn primary. Who's voting in a primary besides the people who really do give a ****?

Maybe they just heard the guy's name, paid no attention to what was actually said and went with it. But I find that highly, highly unlikely. In fact, I think pope might be closer to reality. No way can I say a majority of those votes came from Republicans, but I'm betting a few did.

Junker was born in Germany and lived in Romania when Hitler was gaining power. Junker's father, a farmer, spoke highly of Hitler and that left an impression on Junker. He volunteered to join the German Waffen SS, in 1940 and he served in Russia, where he said he and his countrymen worked to free Russians from communism.

I liked this part of the story. So they weren't trying to conquer all of Europe, they were freeing the Russian people from Communism? What a bunch of sweethearts.

Holocaust deniers like this guy just don't want to acknowledge what they were part of. Others just hate Jews or have an agenda.

There is no way the paper can ignore this guy. From a jouralistic point of view it is an interesting story. Hell, I find it fascinating a guy like this believes what he does. Disturbing, but nonetheless fascinating.

Uhhh, because all views aren't created equal, and those with no basis in fact have no business being in a newspaper.

The man ****ing paid $200,000 to create an homage to Hitler. That is a story. People tend to notice extravagant homages to anti-Semitic dictators and wonder what is going on. The community reaction is a story.

i guarantee you that more than one of my fellow members of the tribe (yeah i'm jewish) are currently googling this guy, forwarding his name to some foundation somewhere and investigating to see whether they can rustle up some evidence on him to forward to the justice department office that prosecutes world war two criminals. i would love to see this 87-year-old loser charged with war crimes -- if there is legitimate evidence.

Seriously! The Russians were burning their homes and all their possessions and running suicide missions rather than surrendering. You'd have thought they'd be throwing rose petals down in the Germans' goose stepping path...

What's amazing is that when Eisenhower first came across the Nazi death camps, he seemed to have anticipated that there would be a day when people would try to deny the attrocities. He got the video cameras in there, paraded as many U.S. servicemen as he could through (he summoned Patton, so he could see, too), and had the U.S. soldiers round up Germans from the surrounding areas and parade them through the camps. In places where there were piles of corpses left behind, they made the Germans from nearby towns cart the bodies and bury them. It was so unbelievable to him, that he wanted as many people as possible to see and document the horrors.

I'd say that denial is Orwellian, but denying the Hollocaust is actually even more sinister.

Fascinating does not equal newsworthy.
One could argue that's one of the biggest problems facing the news industry today.

And, we're not silencing him. We're simply not offering him a platform.
Just like the nutcase who sends a three-page, rambling diatribe in smugged pencil isn't going to make the New York Times letters-to-the-editor; and the guy screaming bible verses outside Grand Central isn't worthy of his own 15-second spot in the evening news.

A friend of mine is a priest in Milwaukee at teh basilica, and has told me more than 75 percent of his parishoners are of polish stock. That's all I was basing it on because the diocese there is fairly sizeable (sorry to go all religous on you). The last time I was in Milwaukee, maybe early 2000s there were still plenty of polish enclaves. Why do you think the city is so famous for sausage?? The Polish of course.

As a journalist and a human being I would want to know why this guy, in the year 2006, thinks Hitler was misunderstood and why he thinks the Holocaust is nothing more than a PR campaign designed by Jews.

If I can learn something about what makes him -- and others like him -- tick I'm in a better position to deal with the subject personally and professionally. Nazis/racists aren't going to disappear quietly.
