I hope this doesn't deliniate into something ugly ... but, man, I got sick to my stomach reading this ... and sicker knowing there are a lot more like this guy out there.

I don't know why a paper would even publicize an old nut like that. I know there's the argument that sunlight is the best disinfectant, but paying him attention just seems wrong.....if you're going to do it, take it from the angle that the local synagogues and civil rights groups are horribly offended, not leading off with this kook's comments...

And good point on the "who most believe" bit. Who cares that this old nut thinks the Holocaust didn't happen? The evidence can't be argued with.

Look here, I don't want to hear **** about this old, meaningless *******. You want a problem? I give you the state of Alabama and Attorney General candidate Larry Darby:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/12/AR2006051201648.html

Quick takeout to save you the time:

BIRMINGHAM -- Democratic Party leaders are wondering what to do about a candidate for attorney general who denies the Holocaust occurred and wants to "reawaken white racial awareness."

Larry Darby, the founder of the Atheist Law Center, made an abortive bid for the AG job as a Libertarian in 2002, but only recently have his views on race and the Holocaust come to light.

Also, from an interview with Darby in the Montgomery Advertiser:

Darby: To stop the Mexican invasion I will ask the governor to declare martial law for the purpose of using either the de-federalized National Guard troops or the activated Alabama State Defense Force.

County sheriffs and a revitalized community-based constabulary will be the first defenders used to ferret out Mexican invaders already present in Alabama. Mestizos will be treated as prisoners of war and escorted to exit points.

Forces at work in Alabama that have actively promoted open borders in the United States caused this crisis affecting all Southern states. I will declare the Southern Poverty Law Center Alabama’s Public Enemy No. 1 and launch a probe into its activities since its inception with a purpose of emptying its coffers, estimated in 2005 at $193 million, and running them out of Alabama.

Major Alabama newspapers owned by foreign corporations appear complicit in treason against Alabama, as are the owners and management of the Southern Poverty Law Center. Reporters and editors continuously write articles promoting foreign and subversive ideologies that over the decades have distorted perceptions of Alabama in other parts of the United States and the world. The Code of Alabama provides for prosecution against defamation, fraud and harassment. Foreign corporations who act to dumb-down or mislead Alabamians will be scrutinized for violations of criminal and civil laws.

As attorney general I will safeguard the interests of Alabama citizens and make sure subversive interests are not allowed to operate under the guise of a free press.

Bad, right?

Not a snowball's chance in ... well, Alabama, wouldn't you say?

Election results from last Tuesday's primary:

Attorney General - - Dem Primary
3240 of 3240 Precincts Reporting - 100.00%

Name Party Votes Pct

Tyson, John Dem 211,185 56.47%

Darby, Larry Dem 162,791 43.53%

162,000 VOTES. ONE. HUNDRED. SIXTY-TWO. THOUSAND. VOTES.

Damn. I didn't think that asshole would get 2 percent of the vote. That's really, really disturbing. Alabama's a conservative state, but they've got decent sized cities , big businesses and colleges there...it ain't a bunch of inbred rednecks chasing each other around with shotguns. I mean, I thought the atheist thing would have killed him in Alabama, but to throw in the Holocaust denial, that's usually poison to the few who could overlook an athiest candidate. Either there are a bunch of dumb-asses voting in the primary who don't know who they're voting for, or people voted for him as a protest against the other guy or there are a bunch of racist, hateful dumb-asses voting.

Why is the Holocaust such a widely denied occurrence? I mean, you never hear about people denying that Chernobyl happened or we dropped two A-Bombs on Japan or really any other historical event.

Granted people joke about the Moon landings being staged, but that all it is-a joke. The Holocaust for whatever reason doubted by so many.

Well, there's also the whole "Intelligent Design" crowd...

Oh, those wacky Democrats.

You read through all those quotes and that's your response? Wacky Democrats?

That's about as pointless as saying, oh, those wacky white people.

actually, people laugh about the moon landings being staged because plenty of people actually did think they were staged in Hollywood.

people either invent **** or deny **** they want to believe so others view the world much like they do ... i don't think WMD is something we've all forgotten yet.

It wasn't funny, dickhead. Not my fault.

You want something to be taken as a joke, try making it funny. Solves the whole problem.

Well, when someone's humorless, they find nothing funny.

But continue to pontificate and express outrage to try and prove how smart you are.

Milwaukee has a huge Polish community, and I would think the backlash on this story will be catastrophic. It's not really even that interesting. Who cares about some back woods jag bag with an homage to Hitler?? The guys got to be out of his mind or just plain stupid to let the MJS talk to him.

You know what makes me a lot more mad than a doddering old fool who denies the Holocaust?

this paragraph from the story:

It's a beautiful location for a memorial to a man who most believe started World War II, in which 50 million people died, including more than 6 million Jewish people in the Holocaust - that's all part of what Junker disputes as bunk.

"who most believe..."

What the ****.
Why would you give this assclown's assertions any merit whatsoever?

I think the "most believe" refers to the "started WWII" part.
Yes, he invaded Poland. And yes, that effectively started WWII. But it's not the same as him coming out and declaring WWII was on. Hence, the qualifier.

Huge Polish community? You either haven't been to Milwaukee recently or are basing your assertion on reports from the '70s and '80s.

Seriously.

And for the record, no one would go so far as to call Elkhorn even a suburb of Milwaukee.

But I have a question regarding a larger issue.

How can anyone say this guy's views should be ignored, scoffed at or quashed just because we don't like his message? I think the guy is a loon, a dangerous loon.

But since when do we get to pick and choose whose views are worthy of being heard?

There is no way the paper can ignore this guy. From a jouralistic point of view it is an interesting story. Hell, I find it fascinating a guy like this believes what he does. Disturbing, but nonetheless fascinating.

I don't share his beliefs. I have no doubt the Holocaust is fact, not myth. But if we start silencing people just because we don't like their message...

Do we really want to travel that road?

Blah, blah, blah.

Plenty of funny people here -- Ace, Bubbler, BYH, Westcoastvol, even boom from time to time. The standard for decent comedy is somewhat elevated. Not my fault that you didn't meet it. Christ, you're sensitive.

And I'm not really sure how I'm trying to prove I'm smart, but you're doing an excellent job of proving the opposite.

Why people deny the holocaust -- because people are NUTS. I've just posted that 162,000 people voted for a guy who wants to declare martial law in Alabama -- ALA-****IN-BAMA, which, if you've not looked at a map lately, isn't exactly a border state -- to stop illegal immigrants from coming in. This on top of his claims that the holocaust was a really big joke, that the SPLC is the biggest problem in the state, that foreign-owned newspapers should be raided and that the white race is supreme.

People. Are. Nuts.

I'm not familiar with Alabama election law, but I sincerely hope that roughly 161,999 votes were from cross-over Republicans who were trying embarass the Democrats. I would (naively) rather believe that his votes were the product of a cynical political campaign than people actually believing what he said.

I'll say this in on the Alabama situation, and maybe a poster from there can enlighten us on the situation, but who was this other guy in the race?

We had a similar situation in a gubernatorial election in the early 90s in Louisiana — Edwin Edwards vs. David Duke. Everybody was shocked at how well Duke did, but it was literally a screwed-either-way choice. You had the former KKK grand wizard against a politician that at that time everybody knew was a crook (coincidentally, both are in jail at the moment). People focused on "how could David Duke almost win?!" but if you were there, it wasn't exactly the easiest choice. Ol'EWE wasn't much better (I believe at this point he'd already been indicted twice for corruption charges. Trial No. 3 was when they got him in the late 90s).

At least that race brought us one of the all-time best political quips, courtesy of Mr. Edwards:

"Like my opponent, I, too, am a wizard under the sheets."
