The Conspirator

Yeah, Stanton went too far and overreached his power after the assassination. I don't put much stock into any theory he was involved though. If anything, he took the crime too personally and made it a vendetta.

GBNF, there aren't too many areas outside of sports where I know much, but I've been fascinated by the Civil War for a long time, particularly the Lincoln assassination and Sherman's march. I'm really looking forward to this movie.

Stanton and his buddies were also the men behind the curtain pulling the strings at the kangaroo court trial of Henry Wirz. For all I know, Wirz may have been the devil on earth and guilty of everything, but I do know the government denied the defense 3/4 of their witnesses while it is a fact after Wirz's execution, the government's star witness was a fraud that was never even at Andersonville.

This is a really, really, really terrible movie. There's not one hint of emotion in any of it. Quite frankly I just did not care whether Mary Surratt lived or died. Historical accuracy? Who gives a **** when there's no attempt at crafting a semi-engaging story. The writing was appalling and overly simplistic. The acting was dog **** throughout. It had the feel of bad community theater. Some Razzies should come out of this too - namely Justin Long (Mac guy) and Alexis Bledel (Rory in Gilmore Girls).

That's disappointing to hear, but I'll still go see it.

AP critic Christy Lemire slammed the movie and gave it 1.5 stars.
That seals it, this movie is going to be excellent.

Why the hate on my gal?

BTW, the movie's produced by Mr. Ricketts of the Chicago Cubs -- go figure that it underperforms.

FWIW, Mudd's great-(times how many?)-son was a sports photographer in Nashville for a long time.

Ebert gives it three stars:

Those most interested in American history will probably find "The Conspirator" most valuable. Those who want a historical romance or a courtroom potboiler will be disappointed. You have to give credit to Redford, Wright and McAvoy, and the other filmmakers. Not many films this smart can be made.

Track record. I've learned over the years that anything she likes I'd rather drink Draino than see and anything she slams is going to be good.

I get tickled reading that "5 Most" series she does from time to time. I usually read it and think WTF is she even talking about.

Fair enough. Comes with the territory for her. I figured maybe he hated her cause she's a dyed in the wool BoSox fan.

I was so looking forward to "The Conspirator." Read five reviews in the past couple days -- including NY Times and New Yorker -- and not one reviewer liked it. So I changed my mind on movie day and am going to see "The Source Code."

Considering the names attached to this project, and redford's stellar track record as a director, the reviews have been a colossal disappointment. darn...
