The 2009 MLB First-Year Players Draft Thread

So, what are the numbers here? 50-50 any of these guys ever make the bigs? 30-70?

All told, maybe 1/50. Maybe higher, I'm not sure.

Just first-rounders? About 2/3 of them will eventually make the majors, at least for a cup of coffee. But you're just as likely to find an everyday player in the second or third or fourth round as you are in the first. There's really no telling.

Sanchez is a great catcher. He can field the position well and can slug some home runs, but didn't look like a first round pick. I would have pegged him to be selected in the 3rd-to-5th rounds.

He was projected as a late first-rounder.

The thinking is that the Pirates will sign Sanchez below slot and spend more later in the draft and internationally. I'm a tad bit skeptical.

The Nats would be foolish to give Strasburg the kind of money Boras is going to demand. Look at the previous 13 pitchers taken No. 1 overall. It's not exactly a who's who of major league talent. Sure, there are a couple guys who have been serviceable pitchers in that group, but nothing worthy of the kind of cash he's going to demand.

This pick is a reminder of exactly why they don't have Matt Weiters. It's that special blend of limited funds, cheap owners who refuse to spend even that much and incompetence in the front office.

I was at Nats Park last night, watched it there while waiting out the rain. I was convinced, for some stupid reason, that Strasburg was going to be in the house and introduced to the crowd. No dice.
I hate to be petty but I was glad to see Crow fall below where he was drafted last year. I hope the Royals hardball the s.o.b. Take this or sit out ANOTHER year.

Someone tell me if I should like this Storen kid taken 10th.

We had a kid here that was projected to go to Boston with their first pick, Max Stassi. He didn't get picked there, or apparently at all. I can't find out why. Can anybody point me to a blog or scouting service that explains why he fell the way he did?

I'm not at all surprised that they did it. This has been the franchise's pattern since the early '90s. Every once in a while they make a lot of noise about spending more money, then they prove it with a relatively high-profile, big-money signing. Once upon a time it was Jason Kendall. Last year it was Pedro Alvarez. Then they go back to going the cheap route.

I am a little bit surprised that they are admitting it. I may not be a fan of the team any more, but as a baseball fan this pisses me off. Try or sell the ****ing team already.
