I'm wondering what everyone thinks of Stanton's run at 61. Given what we know about the only players to surpass 61 HRs in a season, how big of an accomplishment would it be if Stanton reaches 62?

I won't rule out the possibility that Stanton is using PEDs, but there's nothing to suggest he is. If we (skeptically) operate on the assumption that he's clean, do you consider his season to be a superior accomplishment to Bonds/McGwire/Sosa? Do you even care if he hits 62 or is 72 the important number?

I think it would be great if he gets there and I'm rooting for him to do it. I don't particularly view Bonds/McGwire/Sosa's accomplishments as valid. I wouldn't say anything like Stanton has the "real" record, but I'd view his accomplishment more favorably than the other guys' accomplishments.

One problem is that we really don't know if he is clean or not.

A larger problem is the juiced ball. Home runs spiked dramatically in 2016 and went up even more this season.

Home runs have spiked, but is there concrete evidence that the ball is juiced?

Even if they aren't juiced, Stanton's production doesn't look quite as impressive in the context of the dramatic rise in home runs through all of baseball.

doing a quick search, found a few stories where pitchers say the balls feel different. but don't think that is concrete proof. maybe there is concrete proof, but haven't seen it.

He's got 59 with two games to go. The Braves are standing between sanity and a bunch of old color analysts and sports writers channeling Ford Frick and attaching asterisks to things that really happened.
