We had enough intelligence to take him out in air strikes in 1991, I'm sure.

That wasn't the objective. Remember?

Re: Countdown to dead Saddam running thread

Neither was setting up Saddam to slaughter tens of thousands of Shiites.

And if Bush and his boys hadn't ****ed the whole deal up, Saddam could have been dead three years ago. In fact, if Daddy Bush hadn't ****ed up HIS end of it, Saddam could have been dead FIFTEEN years ago. Good work, ****ups.

And how would today be any different?
We'd be in the 15th year of getting shot at by both sides.

But Daddy listened to the UN. Oh well...

Yeah, what a bad move that was ::)

Who was the idiot who gave Saddam the guns and blessing to ascend to power in the first place?

If Carter hadn't hung the Shah out to dry that wouldn't have happened.

An adviser to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said Saddam would be executed before 6 a.m. Saturday, or 10 p.m. Friday EST. Also to be hanged at that time were Saddam's half-brother Barzan Ibrahim and Awad Hamed al-Bandar, the former chief justice of the Revolutionary Court, the adviser said.

Re: Countdown to dead Saddam (no later than 10 PM EST) running thread

Whatever happened to Tariq Aziz, btw?

Re: Countdown to dead Saddam (no later than 10 PM EST) running thread

Hung the Shah out to dry?
You're not ****ing serious.
The Shah got run out of his country by a genuine populist uprising. What did you propose Carter do? Line up the 82nd Airborne with SAVAK?
And the answer to who armed Saddam and the Baathists goes back to the Kennedy Administration.

Re: Countdown to dead Saddam (no later than 10 PM EST) running thread

I agree with what a few others have said. There's no way this turns out well.

Um, what? The Iranian Revolution happened in February 1979; the Ba'ath Party took power in Iraq in 1968, and Saddam was the No. 2 man in the Ba'ath party at that time.

Re: Countdown to dead Saddam (no later than 10 PM EST) running thread

And if Iran doesn't fall in 79, we aren't snuggling up to Saddam in the 80s.

Re: Countdown to dead Saddam (no later than 10 PM EST) running thread

The 1953 coup was our Iranian ****up. No 1953 coup, no 1979 revolution.

By the 1980's, we'd been snuggling up to Saddam for almost 30 years.
The reason? Well, it begins with O and ends with L.

No 1953 coup, there's a commie government in there ready to overrun Iraq, Syria, Turkey and Afghanistan (faster than they tried to).

Re: Countdown to dead Saddam (no later than 10 PM EST) running thread

What I don't understand is why did we have the farce of a trial that was supposed to look like American justice, but ended up looking like a kangaroo court? I'm personally not for hanging people... but if you are going to hang him, why not have done it immediately--no one would be arguing that justice hadn't been served? Or if you felt the need to proceed with a legitimate exercise of due process, then why not wait until Iraq was set up to do it legitimately, with established laws and without Uncle Sam hovering over the court? The way this played out makes the U.S. look farcical to the rest of the world.

It would certainly be no worse.
