Not sure if any of our peers are in Turnberry this week, but I am surprised there isn't yet a thread.

Here goes ... ETW v. Field?

Cut the bull with the title: It's the British Open, at least in this country, in the interests of accuracy.

The logo says "The Open", and I consider it the most elite world golf tournament ... And I started the thread. Three strikes against ya, hondo. :)

in the interests of accuracy it is titled correctly.

It is very weird to think that when I get up tomorrow morning, and I get up at 6:30, some guys will already have posted a score in the clubhouse.

Always ETW v. Field.

What would you set the odds of ETW finishing in the top 10?

What would you set the odds of any other golfer in the world finishing in the top 10?

If it's one on one you take Tiger. Tiger against the field, you always take the field, just look at the percenatges.

In favor of Woods: Those that have won at Turnberry in the past -- Watson, Norman, Price -- were all considered the best player in the world at the time.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Rory McIlroy can do, and hope playing with Tiger the opening two days will help lift Lee Westwood's game.

It's called the British Open in this country to avoid confusion with the U.S. Open. Yet, the purists seem to have a problem with that (with their usual assumption that everyone knows about golf). Just because it was the first golf tournament (1863, by the way), doesn't mean it can co-opt the word "Open."
When someone calls it the British Open, there's no disrespect intended. Lighten up.

I'll just be interested to see if Tiger hits a Japanese photographer with his club since he'll be playing with Ryo Ishikawa the first two rounds.

It hasn't co-opted the word "Open," it's just never used the word "British" or "Scottish" or "English" or any sort of adjective to describe it. It's always been "The Open Championship."

And the tournament actually started in 1860.

The first groups will tee off before I go to bed.

Which begs the question...

Would airing the early starters overnight make any kind of sense for TNT, or is it more trouble than it's worth due to the cost in comparison to airing L&O and Cold Case re-runs?

While I got pissed at NBC for not showing a lot of their Wimbledon coverage live, I'm not sure I can criticize TNT here.

Yeah, I think they are on for something like 10 hours a day. I suppose they could show every single group from first tee to 18th green, but, man, what an undertaking that would be technically and man-power wise.

As it is, they tape stuff and show anything important that we miss. There's more than enough coverage. As much as some night owl like me might sit here and watch till the crack of dawn (like with the Olympics), I can't expect them to do that.

As for Wimbledon, ESPN2 does show most of its stuff live in the early morning. And that's the difference between cable and OTA. NBC has a three-hour window. If they go live, they can't control if they come in during the middle of a match, get stuck between matches and, until this year, get a rain delay. And tennis has a very small mass audience compared to NBC's regular daytime stuff.

I suspect NBC will ditch the weekday daytime coverage within a couple of years and let ESPN2 handle all of that.

As I now own Tiger Woods PGA Tour '09, I will be paying attention. Damn that game is addictive.
