It’s one thing to have a country that is terrible at centering positive conflict resolution and another to have a country marinating in virtually unlimited access to firearms. We have both.

Salt Lake City police said they have taken three people into custody after a shooting near the "No Kings" march downtown Saturday evening left a man with a "critical" gunshot wound.

The injured man was seen collapsed on State Street with emergency responders providing care to him, directly in front of the Liberty SKY apartment complex.

The motive for the shooting and the events that led up to it remained under investigation, police said. Preliminarily, a news release said, the department believes the shooting "involved four people," which included the critically injured victim.

In a statement to The Salt Lake Tribune on Tuesday, the group that organized the protest, Utah 50501, said one of its "safety volunteers," who is a military veteran, "took action" because they believed there was an "imminent threat."

"Our team of safety volunteers, who have been selected because of their military, first responder, and other relevant de-escalation experience, believed that there was an imminent threat to the protestors and took action," the group said. "The safety volunteer who responded to the individual and who was questioned by police is a military veteran."

"We are mourning Afa Ah Loo with everything we have, and we are holding his family and friends in our hearts," Utah 50501 added. "Afa's name, courage, and commitment to his people will never be forgotten."

What doesn’t get mentioned in that snippet is that the volunteer was trying to shoot a guy who was pointing an AR-15 at the protesters. Just an unholy mess all around.

Yeah, on the one hand they seem to have prevented a mass shooting and an even worse outcome.
On the other, they fired into a crowd to do it and killed an innocent bystander.
Road to hell, good intentions, etc.

Just heard about that … very strange, but I guess not a shock in an area saturated with automatic weapons.

A guess would be that something was burning something they didn’t want the authorities to find.

The area AP is reporting for this is not that remote, especially by North Idaho standards. It’s a trailhead on the northeast edge of Coeur d’Alene, about 4 miles north of downtown.

Update from AP: Two killed, police taking “sniper fire” in incident. That’s according to the Kootenai County Sheriff.

You're not wrong … and they all have guns. But this appears to be a plotted out ambush, not your usual drunken brawl/domestic/accidental shooting death that happens every weekend in Coeur d'Alene.
