The main difference being is that there is no concerted effort to respond to the violence with action at the national level.

I think the main difference, among many of them, was that 9/11 was actually an almost universally unifying event for Americans. And, I think that's largely why it was so impacting for the country.

It blows my mind that we cannot seem to get any sort of similar unity when it comes to guns, and gun-related attacks from within our borders. And it's why we can't solve the problem of mass shootings.

Three killed in early morning convenience store shooting in Yakima, Wash. Suspect remains at large … may be surrounded in nearby home.

Update: Suspect shot himself, miles away from where police thought he was barricaded in a home. Motive for shooting unknown -- apparently, shooter was not trying to rob the convenience store. He just entered and killed two people inside, point-blank, as they were buying coffee/food. Then went outside and killed someone as they were getting out of their SUV. At 3:30 a.m.

Very, very lucky there wasn't more victims and mayhem. This guy was walking around Yakima for eight-plus hours after the shooting, still carrying the weapon and plenty of ammunition.

And it still seemed downplayed to me.

Are we surprised it wasn't a white guy? Should we be?

The reporting described the shooter as soon as the description was known.

Again - not downplayed by any news outlet anywhere.

And no, we shouldn't be surprised - by anything.

We teach children in school the appropriate response to an active shooter, how to hide, be quiet. We teach them "If you see something, say something." A kid saw that pistol and was told that if he told anyone about it he'd be shot, and he still went to an adult and reported it. He did his part perfectly.

It was the so-called adults who completely botched the appropriate response.

My godson works at that Target. His dad, one of my best friends, lives nearby and shops there all the time. Luckily, the godson was in school and my buddy was at work.

2:30 on from the original reports, the shooter is not in custody yet.
Local news outlets saying MSU campus is shut down for next 48 hours. All campus activities canceled.
Media briefing set for 11:00 pm.

At least 1 dead, multiple injuries reported in shooting at Michigan State University, police say

Major outlets now reporting one confirmed fatality. Earlier reports, apparently erroneous, had multiple deaths.

Live reports from the scene show literally dozens of ambulances; most indications are most will not be needed.

Local TV stations making the SNL level mistake of grabbing random students passing by and asking, "how do you feel/ what were you thinking?"

(There's still a random shooter loose; nobody ****in cares how they feel)
