Got a lot of stuff done today. I put our weekly paper to bed for Christmas, got my Wifi fixed, got my scrips refilled under my old insurance provider just under the Dec. 31 wire, got confirmation of my new post-Jan. 1 provider with a new card, and just successfully begged out of a 10-hour round trip to see family that I just saw four weeks ago.

And I didn't even have to use my AK. It was a good day.

Had happy hour drinks and dinner with two couples we first met when our kids were all in day care together, continuing a 15-20-year tradition. Usually we meet on Christmas Eve but Micro Jr. is flying home tomorrow night so we had to reschedule.

This tradition happens at Applebee's. Don't judge, it's one of the few places in town open past noon or so on Christmas Eve, so that's where we first met and will continue to do so!

"Finished" )my Xmas shopping (at least for the people I'll be with on Christmas day), bottles returned, doing laundry, tired as heck from work in the last month, but things could be worse. (I like this thread, but was talking to someone at work about what a hard year its been - but I do try and be an optimist.

Not to threadjack, but Applebee’s 2 for $25-$35 menu is good food and a pretty good deal.

And as relates to the thread title, I finished shopping for my wife and got her gifts wrapped with a day to spare! Not bad for a notorious last-minute, refuses to shop online guy.

Some good days lately. Enjoyed our daughter's performance in a small musical that was featured at the New York Theatre Festival on the Lower East Side. It ran a week, she had a great time, she beat out a lot of others at auditions and callbacks to land a principal role, which has been very satisfying and hopeful for her, and we got to see it twice at the end of last week as my wife and I splurged on a trip to NYC as our Christmas gift to each other and to watch the girl do her thing. She had fun, felt seen, a bunch of her fellow graduated musical theatre college classmates came to the show, and she learned at the cast party late after the last show that there's some momentum for them to do the show at 54 Below uptown sometime in April. Fingers crossed.

Rushed two Broadway shows - saw Laurie Metcalf's (she's UNBELIEVABLE on stage) excellent play a day before closing from the third row for less than $100 for both tickets, and then rushed "Two Strangers (carry a cake across New York)" for about the same price. Really terrific show and Sam Tutty would not be a surprise to win a Tony. Really clever shows, both of them.

Flew home to NC with the wife and kid on Monday, the flight home was wonderfully smooth (going up was NOT) and just trying to enjoy the week before it goes by too quickly. Not much work needing to be done, but enough to still feel connected, plenty of gin in the house, the beagle is happy to have us home and the walks have been frequent and long.

Good days. Happy holidays to all the good people here.

Two of our three "plans" fell through because of the rain forecasts in SoCal.

Tuesday we were going to San Diego and back (1-1/2 hours each way) for a family (wife's side) gathering. Canceled.

Today was our annual Christmas Eve dinner with my side of the family, about an hour away in West L.A. My niece/husband/kid have a longer drive than us. Postponed until Saturday.

I'm not unhappy over either of these situations.

Thursday, daughter and boyfriend at our house for home-cooked prime rib. YAY, that's a winner. Merry Christmas to all!!!

74 degrees and sunny on Christmas Eve here in the sticks.
I swear…..it feels more like Memorial Day than Christmas Eve.

Yeah, it's shorts weather here in the Rockies for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

I'm dreaming of a .... brown Christmas.

Christmas Eve church service, which was kinda meh, as always; then a tamale dinner at home with just the wife and our two almost-grown kids. They have their own lives so it’s been a while since just the four of us sat around the dinner table at our house.

It’ll be presents in the morning. Wife has no idea she’s getting Rhiannon Giddens concert tickets. Then a lazy day with a big pasta dinner tomorrow night.

We hosted our very small family gathering today, and I cooked it all for the first time ever. I'm not generally someone who cooks, but with the help of my elderly mom we got it done and it came out OK. That counts as a great day in my book! My nephew just graduated from college, so always neat to hear what is happening in a young person's world.

Smoked brisket or it doesn't count.

Today was still a good day, but had to share an anecdote which at the end of the day brightened it a little for the fogies.

I had newlyweds at the store and a golden opportunity to sign them up for their first credit card. The Gen WTF dude didn't have his DL on him and didn't know his DL number. Probably didn't know his SSN either.

Got an unsolicited call about applying for a job that has never been on my radar. Starting pay is half-again what I'm making now, with a full week of PTO more than I get now, better 401k match, and working for someone I know and trust from a former work stop. I'm very happy in my current gig, but given all that, figure I have to at least explore it.

Also, felt like a complete degenerate for betting Louisiana Tech -8.5 against Coastal Carolina. Was writing it off as a loss, then Louisiana Tech scored the final 20 points of the game, 17 in the fourth quarter alone, with a field goal with a minute left to win 23-14.

I'm sure I'll make some stupid gambling decisions on today's schedule to make up for that, but yesterday was a nice little day.
