The lionization of mascots at southern schools is foreign to this Midwesterner, and thus, kind of humorous.

I was just at LSU and a restaurant I went to in Baton Rouge had pictures of all of the Mike The Tiger's through the years. Of course, there's also the $1.5 million Tiger Den constructed for LSU's living Mike V mascot. Some of the ushers there were giving me updates on where Mike V is in his maturation process. It was delivered to me with such an earnest tone, I had to struggle to keep a smirk off my face.

It's all harmless, and RIP to Uga, but the idea that there's a faux-royal line of mascots, complete with roman numeral designation just strikes me as funny.

Up here, we're perfectly fine with our anthropomorphic mascots. Bucky Badger will never die!

I agree! When I read that article/obit, I kept checking the source to make sure it wasn't from The Onion. Seriously -- the school issues a statement, quotes from the AD, players not being available for comment?! It was over the top... for a flatulent little bulldog, anyway.

Bulldogs almost never live very long. It's the only thing that's prevented me from getting one.

A lot of bulldog breeders sell insurance where if the dog dies within the first year you can get another. Apparently something like 10-15 percent die the first year. I think it's pretty rare for one to live more than seven years.

I read an article about the whole beauty pagaent-like process they go through to chose the dog in the first place. Its such a huge deal and me, not being from the South, just don't understand.
