Wow. That's sad. I was born outside Detroit and my dad always liked Sparky.

If by 8 Mile you mean Royal Oak, yes. :D

My grandmother lived off 14 Mile, but way up in Troy. Not even remotely the same.

Re: Sparky Anderson in hospice, suffers from dementia

I would bet money on him being much older than 76.

Big Red Machine teams had unusually large names on the backs of the uniforms.

Names like Anderson, Geronimo and especially this guy used up almost all the available real estate.

Re: Sparky Anderson in hospice, suffers from dementia

Sparky used the tell the story of how Mickey Mantle once teased him years ago about having white hair at such an early age. Sparky's reply: "Yeah, Mick, but in 20 years people will say, 'hey, Mick, look how much you've aged' but to me they will say, 'Sparky, you haven't changed in 20 years.'"

Wasn't he in his 30s when he got the Reds job?

Re: Sparky Anderson in hospice, suffers from dementia

Sparky was 36 when he took over the Reds. One of the great interviews and storytellers in baseball. This is very sad to hear.

Re: Sparky Anderson in hospice, suffers from dementia

Great manager. One of the few to win World Series with two teams.

Very sad. How can you not love Sparky? And yes, 76 is very young.

Side, note: mom's from Royal Oak. Went to the Shrine of the Little Flower & was married there too.
