Just awful.

I covered a great game between Mississippi State and Arkansas that went to overtime in Starkville back in 2010. Spoke to him a year or two later when he was the Patriots backup for about 10 minutes about that game, and he couldn't have been nicer.

Very few details, just saying he was transported from a beach somewhere. But there have been a lot of social media stories this week about much worse than usual rip currents in the Gulf, especially Panama City Beach.

I’m literally on the beach at Gulf Shores right now. Things have calmed considerably here on the Gulf. But it was rough last week.

Holy hell. That's a tough one. I saw him at Jerry World in the first A&M-Arkansas game there in 2009. He was what he was, an immobile thrower, but the Hogs won pretty big that day.

I enjoyed watching him sling the ball around the yard in Petrino's offense at Arkansas. 35 is way too young. Very sad. Probably had a good coaching career ahead of him.

I saw this post this afternoon. Then I went over to Facebook and a friend of mine posted that his family is in mourning over the loss of his cousin, who drowned. It was Ryan Mallett. Sad.

He spent his freshman year at Michigan as the top backup to Chad Henne in Lloyd Carr's last season. He transferred to Arkansas because his skill set wouldn't have fit in Rich Rodriguez's offense. He got a decent amount of playing time at Michigan, especially when Henne got hurt, and did a good job.

35 is way too young.

Digging into it, Mallett and his group went out to a second sandbar. The trough between the first and second is infamous for causing drownings. People misjudge the tide flowing through it or the water is deeper than expected. Plus it’s often 100 yards off the beach.

Great fishing in that trough though. Just don’t leave the first sandbar.

Creepy how this came just a day before the 40th anniversary of Joe Delaney's drowning. I realize Mallett was out of the league, but I have to think GMs sweat out this next week and just hope a player they are counting on doesn't do something JPP-ish over the next few days.
