In charge of the Big 8 CKLW back in the days they were heard across 27 states and four provinces she was the only program director to ever have a song written about her

RIP to the lady with the golden ear. (Although I must admit I HATED many of the songs she promoted, so I'd have made a lousy PD.)

I know Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and Cleveland were huge markets for pop influencers, but CKLW was one of those stations that was right up there for me. I know they played a really unique playlist for its time -- songs I never heard in either Miami (on WQAM) or San Francisco (KFRC or KYA) -- and always wondered who was programming music for them. Amazing to think it was a woman in an era when MDs and PDs (music directors and programming directors) were almost exclusively men.

I always looked forward to visiting Detroit when I was really thinking about radio as a career, because there was so much great happening on the airwaves in the Motor City and across the river in the '70s.
