It's Elmore Rual Torn. I finally looked it up.

He was brilliant in "Defending Your Life," as well. It was actually this role that led to him being cast as Artie.

The scene where he takes a hammer to Norman Mailer in that weird ****ing Mailer movie is hard to watch. First thing I thought of though. Norman's real-life children crying. Mailer nearly bit and, um, tore Torn's ear off. Yeesh.
