CBS Radio top-of-hour-news just reported the sporting goods company is closing its doors, in part due to on-line competition. Modell's got started in the 1800s.

Other than ****’s, are there any big sporting goods chains left?

I am a devotee of the highest order of Academy.
My fantasy is to win some kind of contest and win big shopping spree there.

I'd spend it quick. I'm not confident in Academy's long-term outlook.

The days of big boxes where you can buy everything from underwear to golf clubs to grills and guns are coming to an end. Which will be a shame, because I do enjoy strolling Academy to kill time on rainy days.

My area has a Buffalo Wild Wings and an Academy sharing a parking lot. I go to Bdubs, eat, have a couple of beers, then go check things out at Academy.
A few months ago I was turned on to a website that offers a good selection of fishing lures, so I know where I can stock up on that if Academy goes under.
What I really like at Academy is their Magellan line of clothes.

That surprises me because there are so few brick and mortar places left where you can do the same. REI is the only other place I can think of in that genre.

There is a mall not far, built in the early 70s. The anchors are Sears (closing), macy's (life support) and large Modell's. It'll be an assisted living facility soon enough.

Ours has gotten a splash of life thanks to the addition of a bowling alley and one of the state colleges that turned the old JC Penney's into a branch campus.

We have an Olympia Sports.
Before I left New England, the one near me was holding on by its fingertips.

I think the issue with all of the sporting goods stores is that places like Walmart and Target are eating their lunch, too, not just Amazon and online retailers. I used to go to Bob's and Olympia for things like athletic shorts, because the selection wasn't great at the non-specialized big box stores. Now though, I got a couple nice pairs for $5 to $10 each at Target. Basketball shoes, my last two purchases have been online, because the selection was so much greater and better than Olympia.
