Detroit Lions Rookie of the Year in 1967 and a two-time Pro Bowler died Monday at 70, but that's not even half the story.

Former Detroit Lions RB Mel Farr dead at 70

Along with teammate Lem Barney, did background vocals on Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On?"

Owned a number of Ford dealerships in the Detroit area, and at one time was among the most successful black business owners in the country.

Also made some great commercials:

apparently Farr and Barney tried to arrange a tryout for Gaye with the Lions in the late 1960s

A kid on the way at 70 to boot. Hopefully, those royalties keep on coming.

Farr, whose cause of death is unknown pending an autopsy, is survived by his wife, Jasmine, daughters Monet and Milan, and sons Mel Jr., and Mike. Jasmine is expecting another daughter, Melia, due in November.
I would have to assume he remarried a much younger woman. At least I sure hope so.

When I was about 12, UCLA had Farr stashed at Santa Monica College, which is about 5 blocks from where I lived. Saw most of his games. He was a JC superstar running back. Later in my career, I covered UCLA when his sons played.

One of my first NFL cards! I can still see him with the Lions gear and pads. "...and (Greg) Landry hands off to Farr off tackle for 5...." May he RIP.
