Re: He left home without them

Ouch. This one hurts.

In addition to the AMEX commercials, so many distinctive roles.

Jimmy Piersal's dad in Fear Strikes Out.
Gus in The Sting II.
Herb Brooks in that Miracle on Ice movie soon after the 1980 Olympics.
General Bradley in Patton
Shooter in The Cincinnati Kid
Father Barry in On the Waterfront

Just to name a few. I'm sure I am missing some good ones.

RIP

That Miracle On Ice movie was on a couple weeks ago. I don't remember seeing that before. It looked like there was lots of actual game footage in there.

I haven't seen it in years, but if memory serves, it was one of the worst jobs ever of mixing in actual game footage with actors. They would show grainy footage of the actual games and then do a horrible job of cutting to Karl Malden on the bench--filmed in some place that didn't capture the feel of the real footage. I don't know how soon after the Olympics the movie came out, but it seemed like a rush to capitalize.

Yeah, very tight shots of the bench, and of the "parents" in the stands, and wide shots of all else.

According to IMDB, released 3/1/81

EDIT: A further check shows that Jerry Houser, who also played "Killer" Carlson in Slapshot, was also in this movie!

MSNBC reporting....

Liked him in Streets of San Francisco, but was even more impressed when I finally saw On The Waterfront, Patton and his earlier works....

"He's got it. The Kid has the ACE!"

(LA TIMES) BRENTWOOD -- Academy Award and Emmy winning actor Karl Malden died today. He was 97.

Malden, who starred in the 1970s TV series "The Streets of San Francisco" and was the longtime American Express traveler's check spokesman, warning travelers to not leave home without it.

Malden's family informed the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences of his death on Wednesday. Malden served as the academy's president from 1989-92.

Granted, this thread title doesn't tell you what it is, but ... sort of a d_b

Re: He left home without them

"The Streets of San Francisco" with some kid named Michael Douglas as his sidekick. Quinn Martin weeps.

Sirs, Madames,

He had been in frail health for a long time. I did a piece on Budd Schulberg and the 50th anniversary of On the Waterfront and he couldn't make it out to the screening because the end looked imminent ... that was early 2004.

RIP Father Barry

That would be a cool piece to read, friend. For whom was it written?

Ned (Oggie Oglethorpe) Dowd also worked on the movie, behind the camera.

With a very young Steve Guttenberg as Jim Craig......turning in a pretty good job as I recall.

One of the better actors in the 20th century. Was great in the Jimmy Piersall story. And of course he made The Streets of San Francisco a hit. Loved that nose.

Re: He left home without them

When I was a kid in the 70s, I remember reading a comic strip (I forget which one) that said this:
"You ever noticed in those American Express Traveler's Checks ads, how whenever somebody lost their wallet he was always around? Kind of makes you wonder."

One of the first actors I knew by name.

One of my earliest memories is watching Streets Of San Francisco with my mom back in the mid 70s. He's the first TV star I remember, he had a great presence.

Of course, he was a great movie actor too. I watched the Cincinnati Kid the other night and he was excellent.

Back to Streets of San Francisco. Next to Rockford Files, it had the second-greatest open in TV history. It's the way I'll always think of Malden.

RIP.
