RIP Sid Krofft

I loved my Saturday morning cartoons but never had the slightest interest in the weird, non-animated puppet stuff (Banana Splits, H.R. Pufnstuf, Lidsville, New Zoo Revue, etc.).

There was definitely a time and place for this, but it missed me by several years to a decade. It all came across to me as kind of frightening, to be honest.

"Hey kids, come with us to the land of dreams! Follow us to downtown Atlanta...here's a balloon! It'll be fun!!!"

I'm to only guy you <sorta> know who wore the Pufnstuff suit, as a costumed character at Six Flags. I also went through the Sid and Marty Krofft theme park in the old Omni International Hotel, later CNN Center. You rode a seven story escalator to the top and worked your way down through the park. It was full of live show performers - bands, mimes, jugglers, puppeteers, all sorts of talent. Since they had to pay them like live talent, they went broke relatively soon. It wasn't like paying minimum wage or a touch above at Six Flags. Glad I got to see it though, it was totally unique. You never knew what you would find around the next corner.

RIP.

Same here.

And don’t get me started on Soul Train. Some great Saturday morning cartoons. Then another cartoon about a train … only to see a bunch of people dancing. Talk about a tease and a letdown.

RIP to a corny pioneer. His shows were always on in the 80s, long after they aired originally, on a local channel during my childhood. Had a huge crush on Holly from Land of the Lost.....but my favorite was Sigmund and the Sea Monsters.

In a much different vein, they did D.C Follies which I watched a lot too.

My childhood. Loved all of the shows. Land of the Lost, HR Pufnstuff, Dr. Shrinker, Electra Woman and Dyna Girl, Wonder Bug, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters ... all of the shows and all of the characters.

Dyna Girl made me start taking special notice of the female species.

That was obviously before Stefano kidnapped Marlena Evans and before she was possessed by the devil.

Having sat through many guitar masses and more than my share of productions of Godspell, I'm glad I missed this.

Langnaippe:

Victor Garber was my generation of theatre kids' version of the non-threatening imaginary boyfriend. I remember a gaggle of us were on about how DREEEEEEAMY he was. Our very gay theatre teacher muttered something about how we'd figure it out.
