Peter Uberroth, who was the commissioner before Gianetti, would also stand up to the owners. Selig got the job because the owners knew him, tristed him and would attempt to lead by consensus of the owners..

Happy Chandler started the players’ pension fund and at the very least did not stand in the way of Jackie Robinson joining the Dodgers. (Whether he proactively help push it through is in dispute.) He actually was decently ahead of his time on civil rights when he went back to Kentucky for another term as governor but the older he got the more cringy his vocabulary became on the topic of race.
