RIP David Crosby

Honestly, a deadpool HOFer for the last 30 years. He's not Keith Richards, but he's in the same room.

And one hell of a singer - goodness. His own projects or contributing - shoot, he sang back-up on Hold My Hand by Hootie and the Blowfish.

He “produced” the first big albums for Jefferson Airplane and Joni Mitchell just by lending his name to their work and getting out of the way. I can’t tell what level of genius that is…having the foresight to let the musicians do what they want, but also getting paid for doing nothing.

He may be gone, but the wisdom (and the music) lives on.

Well this sucks. I loved CSNY. His first solo album, “If I Could Only Remember My Name,” is a favorite - especially Music is Love and Cowboy Song.

Thanks to Wolfgang’s Vault, I’ve been able to listen to three of their nights at Fillmore East in 1970, at the quartet’s height. The banter among them was great - especially David. I love that he wrote and played a song called “Triad,” which was essentially a plea to his girlfriend to be in a threesome.

RIP. Wish you were able to get your beloved boat back.

IIRC, Roger McGuinn gave Crosby a lot of credit for putting The Byrds together. Similar on bringing Graham Nash in on CSNY.

Oh man this one stings. My uncle made guitars for Crosby and became good friends with him. They were going through health problems at the same time. My uncle is really sad right now. RIP.

One fun memory, my uncles were talking about Crosby when I was still a kid. I just sat there listening at their stories. After I don’t remember how long, one of my uncles finally asks me if I knew who they were talking about. And with all my child over confidence to please the adults said “of course I know who Bing Crosby is.” The look of pain they went over their faces was classic. I’m shocked after 30 years (more or less) they still talk to me.

Saw him live once. Unfortunately, it wasn't a concert. It was at the IN-N-OUT next to LAX. We pulled up and saw a stretch limo in the parking lot. Went in, looking for a celebrity. There he was with wife and a kid, having burgers. They were wearing shorts and T-shirts. Driver was in full uniform, including hat.

Crosby and Nash were both in love with Joni Mitchell, who cast quite a spell in her day.
Guinevere is his best work, phenomenal song.

Only real extended exposure I had to David Crosby (besides of course the CSN + Y music) was seeing him in that Netflix movie "Echo in the Canyon" about the folk music scene in Laurel Canyon (LA). Crosby seemed like a nice, sincere guy who understood he screwed up at times. May he RIP.

Also, can’t find the stories, but didn’t Crosby have a car (a Mercedes ?) that he would sell for cocaine, then the person who bought it would die/go to jail/vanish and the car would be returned to Crosby each time.

That story is in his memoir, which is about as blunt and unsparing as any I've ever read, especially with regard to how far down the rathole his meth and freebase cocaine habit pulled him.

IIRC he sold his car for drug money, the guy he sold it to died before putting the paperwork through, and Crosby went and essentially stole it back.

If you ever read that book, there's a picture of Croz at rock bottom of his drug habit. A Google images search didn't pull it up. He looked like the after pictures of meth heads you see now - gaunt, hollow eyed, lank greasy hair, pretty much like a bum who ambled out of an alley. The proverbial thousand words sort of picture. /shudder He really looked bad.
