One of the top character actors around. Oscar noms for "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" and "To Be or Not to Be." Memorable performances in "Tootsie" and "The Sting" and others too numerous to mention.

Boy, first Klugman and now this, though they both led long, full lives.

D-Day vet and Silver Star recipient. His NYT obit is an amazing read. I was really happy when he received the Screen Actors Guild lifetime achievement award. He's one of those guys that has done so much stuff (more than 200 credits), King of the "THAT Guys?"

always did a good job with sleezy politician roles, playing the governor in Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Honey Fitz in a Kennedys miniseries and Governor "Pass the Biscuits" Pappy O'Daniel in O Brother Where Art Thou

He was terrific as the crooked cop in "The Sting".

RIP

Durning also was great as the asshat assistant coach in "North Dallas Forty."

I had no idea he was the voice of Peter Griffin's dad in Family Guy.

Obviously, he had greater roles than that. Loved him in several movies, but especially in O Brother Where Art Thou.

RIP.

Beat me to it, Rip. As a kid, he made me crack up in this role seeing the movie at the theater.

RIP to one of my favorite character actors. Loved his character in Evening Shade. Looking back that show had a pretty amazing cast in Burt Reynolds, Ossie Davis , Michael Jeter , Hal Holbrooke and Durning.

I'm with Boom in admiring his work on "Evening Shade." great cast indeed. RIP to a pro.

The final scene from Brian DePalma's Sisters where his character stakes out Margot Kidder's sofa from a telephone pole has to be one of the weirdest movie endings ever.

Shake a leg, Junior. Thank God your mammy died givin' birth. If she'd have seen you, she'd have died of shame.
