Have to attend an event tonight with valet parking.
Do you tip the valet when you hand off the keys or when you get the car back or both times?
I don't remember.
I'll be suiting up, and will check the responses shortly.

I usually do it upon safe return of vehicle.

if it's a dump, a buck or two.
A classier dump, a finnif.

But I probably should start tipping the other way around, giving more to the poor schlub at the joint that shouldn't really have valet parking, but does.

I initially thought this was a query about tipping the velvet. Oh well, that would have been much more exciting.

so i'm good to tip when i get the car, cool.
and tonight will be awe ..... wait for it .....takes a nap ...... some
anyone want to make a slapbet for the Super Bowl?
Inky?

Tip upon receipt of said vehicle. Now, if you want a primo space or have concerns, I tip beforehand to ask they keep good care of (convertible.)

Just be sure you don't get this guy as your valet:

That's very well played.

Relax, I'm a professional.

I usually tip when I hand off the vehicle. I feel like they're less likely to **** with it if you've already shown a willingness to tip. They're more likely to think that if they bring it back without ****ing it up, they'll get another tip. They'd be wrong, but at least they don't **** with my car.

I find if you put $10 in your cleavage as a tip when you give them the car, they usually take excellent care of you.

Not when you've got chest hair. :-X

Chest hair and cleavage, you don't need a valet parker, you need a dark alley.

Since the valet service at Arby's is a thing of the past, I've never had to worry about this problem.

Thanks for the tips.
The thing Friday was simply the fanciest thing I've, maybe, ever had to attend.
Four open bars in the fanciest hotel in town. Crab cakes and filet mignon for the meal and expensive wine. It was insane, a string section during the meal.
I merrily jumped off the wagon for the night and got very, very drunk.

Actually, my aunt's husband is the boss of the valets for a major, major, huge-ass casino. We got into a discussion about this once -- he said it's customary to tip both, because the same valet who parks your car may not be the same one who retrieves it -- so a little to both is what is preferred. It's up to you how much you tip, but he said (whether it's greedy or not) that they tend to expect a little more from people in nicer cars. Or, as he said it, nice-uh cahs.

I try to avoid the valet -- I drive a ****ty SUV and I make sportswriter salary. And walking to and from the public parking area is the most exercise I get in a month. So, I figure I have more money in my pocket and I'll live longer.
