NCAA press credentials and and "substantial" coverage

College lacrosse, men or women, is pretty damn entertaining. Great competition here on the east coast and when played at the highest level, it's as pretty as good ice hockey. But lacrosse should not ever be confined inside of arenas.

I'm mildly sympathetic to the NCAA in situations like this. With new web sites and bloggers popping up all over the place -- some associated with traditional media and others not -- it's very hard for the NCAA to figure out where to draw the line these days. They undoubtedly want to avoid setting the bar for approval too low on the premise that it's easier to include more people next year than it is to kick people out.

Definitely go the route of finding a sympathetic SID to pull strings for you. It shouldn't be that big a deal to squeeze one more body into the box, plus some people will be no-shows because their teams will be knowcked off before the championship weekend.

I think the NCAA just went to a new system for championships where the SIDs of schools playing are the only ones who can vouch for you. In other words, it's supposed to eliminate non-regulars from covering the events. This was the case locally for our basketball tournament first-round coverage, anyway.

I can't really say I've ever had much of a problem with our major D-I school, but then again, the women's basketball SID didn't respond when my reporter requested credentials (and he tried calling and e-mailing a few times), but immediately hooked me up when I contacted her.

Then again, it might have been because I was the managing editor, not just a reporter...

Dude, how small must your paper be to get denied Women's Lacrosse credentials? Or did you all just **** someone off at the NCAA?

Here's how that phone conversation should go

SE: I was calling to get an update on the women's lacrosse tournament credentials for my paper.

SID: Sorry sir, we are at capacity with credentialed reporters and cannot accomadate your paper.

SE: (pause, followed by laughter) Great joke, but seriously.
