There's no way they continue separately, sadly. And, I found it curious that there's no mention of MediaNews Group's suburban Detroit holdings, which also doesn't bode well for them. Among the holdings are the Oakland Press, Macomb Daily and News-Herald.

Have a friend who works there and they've been told they're going to maintain both papers but I don't believe Gannett

I could be very wrong, but I would argue that Gannett not honoring the contract actually buys the News some time. If Gannett wanted to dissolve the paper, consolidate its publications or fire a bunch of reporters, they probably should have honored the previous contract so that severance and other terms are set. Now they have to enter a long period of status quo and negotiate that. The quality of life may suck in that newsroom as this contract is negotiated, but I wouldn’t be surprised if things keep operating.
