Rules You Would Like To See Changed in Sports

For the NBA, change how the way teams trade draft picks to how they do it in the NFL.

I’m tired of seeing Team A draft a player, who then puts on Team A’s cap, while we’re hearing from the broadcasters that the player is actually being traded to Team B.

If Team B wants the player, make the trade for the draft pick before or during when Team A is on the clock, then Team B makes the pick, and then the player puts on Team B’s cap.

We just played our annual "Knuckleball Night" game against a local senior baseball team, adopting many rules from the Bananas.

Every batter started with a 1-1 count. Wonderful. I suggested we adopt this format for every non-league game.

I like the Bananaball idea that if a fan catches a foul ball on the fly, it counts as an out.

I’m just imagining a fan catching a foul for the last out of Game 7 of the World Series.

Another hockey blue line rule suggestion, a version of lacrosse’s rule about maintaining offensive position in the box with a lead during the last two minutes …

During 3x3 overtime play, a team that controls the puck in the offensive zone cannot carry or pass it out of the zone to reset or get a change. You must stay in the zone. Or, modifying that idea a bet, perhaps you can’t go back over the red line and have to stay on the offensive half of the rink, almost a basketball back-court/over-and-back-type rule.

Soccer: Bring back the Golden Goal. No need for a full 30 minutes of OT, especially in a scoreless match. First score in OT wins it.

NHL: Extend OT from 5 minutes to 10 minutes. This would cut down on a lot of games going to shootout.

Find a way to project the lines onto the pitch virtually, à la the Big XII basketball tournament. Put the goals on some kind of mechanical belt and every five minutes of overtime move each one in five feet towards the center.

Been saying something similar since 3x3 started. There has to be a way to eliminate the keep away element. The 3x3 action itself is kind of fun, but not when you just have teams cycling and dumping it back for 4:30.
