I think when a company buys another company, barring a bankruptcy filing, the buyer assumes the contracts of the predecessor company, including the labor contract. The way around this is for the acquirer to buy just the assets of the predecessor. The asset that has the most value to Gannett is the subscriber list of the News and the name.Depends on how the sale was structured.
Depends on whether there’s a clause in the contract that allows for it to be voided upon sale.
I have a very old friend who works at the News and he said they will be offered jobs.I think when a company buys another company, barring a bankruptcy filing, the buyer assumes the contracts of the predecessor company, including the labor contract. The tipoff is if Gannett says workers can reapply for their jobs. By making workers reapply Gannett can hire whoever they want. If sued Gannett will argue that any legal resident can apply for a job, including ex-News employees, and they can not discriminate against anyone applying, but they never assumed the labor contract.
