Les Gams did their version of "He's Got the Power" by The Exciters.

The Exciters ...

We once caught this obscure San Francisco band, Spot 1019, on a cross-country tour, and that night they impressed with the theme song from "Gilligan's Island" ... ... ... wait for it ... ... ... sung to the pace and tune of "Born to Run." It came off well. Crowd loved it.

Little hope of finding that on the Magic Electric Internet,
but I did find the band with another catchy, eclectic cover ...

For those who may not be familiar-- which in this discussion is probably nobody -- Hindu Love Gods is R.E.M. with Warren Zevon on lead vocals instead of Michael Stipe.
I didn’t know who they were on your first post but the singer sounded like Warren Zevon. So I googled them.

Damn, this thread blew up quick.

Re the Jason and the Scorcher's cover of "Absolutely Sweet Marie", I caught Warner Hodges (lead guitarist) at a house concert here a few years back. His daughter and more importantly his granddaughter live here, and once in a while he plays a small show at her house. They charge like $20 a head. Everyone brings a twelve pack and a covered dish/dessert and he rocks out solo in the living room for 20-30 people.

He was talking about when they went on tour with Dylan after that video hit MTV. They were too intimidated to play their cover in front of the man, and the first couple of nights they did not. Third night, Dylan came back to their dressing room. (You gotta just imagine Warner doing a halfass Dylan impersonation through here.) "Why aren't you playing my song? I loved the way you did it, and you're not playing it. What the hell? I hired you guys because I liked the way you did that song." LOL.

To bring it full circle, Warner was also talking about Dan Baird, who was the lead singer for the Georgia Satellites. They're old friends and Warner plays with him in a band called Homemade Sin. Anyhow, this song was written by Terry Anderson and his band, The Woods. It was first covered by the Satellites. It rocks.
