here's something different -- there are literally hundreds, maybe thousands, of covers of "1952 Vincent Black Lightning," ranging from scores of people singing in their bedrooms to their cell phones up to and including Bob Dylan -- but this one takes a different twist:

Don’t care much for their music — pretty much all country music, really — but always thought the best cover band name I’d heard was Hayseed Dixie. All country covers of AC/DC songs.

For some reason King for Just One Day popped into my head the other day - the Thompson Twins song - it's a good song, but the production is drenched in '80s synth. I imagine there are more than a few '80s songs that could be de-synthed, re-arranged or reimagined in a different genre - similar to the Disturbed Sound of Silence.

Robert is Robert Fripp of King Crimson and assorted solo/session glory (notably David Bowie). Toyah is his wife Toyah Wilcox, UK New Wave siren of the 70s/80s. They've been married 35+ years.
He's 75, she's 63. Just a nice quiet senior English couple.

Fripp is a piece of work. At one King Crimson concert I attended he sat behind a screen for the entire show. All you could see of him was a silhouette.

I knew a guy who served some sort of apprenticeship with Fripp back in the early 1990s or so. Gifted guitarist.

I swear part of the curriculum was restoring an old house Fripp bought (I think in London). Fripp had a couple of disciples sanding, painting etc 8-10 hours a day under the belief that hard work was good for the artistic soul. It was a full Tom Sawyer move.

That's funny. Fripp had an educational program called Guitar Craft that apparently thousands of students went through. I wonder if that's the apprenticeship your friend went through.

A good cover, much different in tone and texture that the original. A stylistic improvement to my ear.

Jason is now "Farmer Jason." A friend took his daughter and her best friend to a show at a small venue where they were serenaded by Jason and at one point stood on chairs and danced. Little C. declared when she was a big girl she was going to shows and dance for people to sing for her. Dad told me he muttered something about convent school at the time, but otherwise let it be.

I have been watching "The Newsroom" on HBO. Final episode of season 2 closes with Pete Townshend's "Let My Love Open the Door," covered by Luminate, a band I must admit I'd never heard of. It's simply wonderful. And it accompanied a great scene in what I have discovered to be an outstanding show.



I also discovered the website tunefind.com. Another great site.
