Has anyone ever designed a travel-tourism map?

I need to put together a map for a bike tour. One that will highlight the route, sights and attractions.

Has anyone ever done this? Paid to have it done? Used Google Maps?

I used to have AAA make one up for my driving vacations. Very useful, pre-internet!
