Weird sort of threadjack here, but this is a very well-written story about someone receiving their lethal injection.

It also illustrates why, and I'm assuming here, some don't think the death penalty is effective in its current method:

“I feel insulted by whoever decided to say that lethal injection was cruel and unusual punishment to the inmates,” she said. “I feel like that’s a slap in the face to everybody’s family that had to go through something that we had to endure. If that is cruel, just imagine being stabbed and beat with a hammer or worst of all, losing your child.”

this is another threadjack, but I've always found it curious that the families of the victims make it about them: "worst of all, LOSING a child"
It morphs from the victim to "how it affects me"

The death penalty debate ended 40 years ago up here.

It's a total non-issue. I mean, none.

Sure, there's some advocates who want to bring back the noose but they're mostly ignored.

JR hit this on the head. Even though I live in a province where that sentiment may be more prevalent, there is no renewed call for the death penalty.

I think that if the Bernardo case did not rally the population to press for the death penalty, nothing will.

As a result, only one man died, and his life was not within their power to save. Thanks to their actions, the attacker is in jail.

A few days later, anyone complaining about their lack of "help" has obviously never seen a bus in their lives.

It would have been akin to the one-on-one attacks seen in some horrible action movie, except for real, and with horrific results. This wasn't some attacker to be overcome in an exposed setting. This is a aisle to squeeze down in order to subdue somebody brandishing a knife the size of the aisleway.

As for my earlier statements, again, I'm not saying they could have saved the dude's life. I'm just saying that I find it f-ed up that a whole bus full of people just got up and left. I didn't read anywhere that this guy was in the back row, so correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't at least some of these passengers have had to pass by him (as he is slicing and dicing away with his back turned)?

But, hey, what do I know? Maybe they passed by him politely and even said "excuse me fine gentleman, may I squeeze by you while you hack that poor man to pieces?"

God-willing, none of us will ever find ourselves in a situation where our life depends on a stranger stepping up and not being a *****.

If he was in the back, then I can sort of understand the whole "out of their control" situation. They would have had to go back there and he would have seen them, making them possible victims.

But, again, my impression was that someone had to have passed by him. Or, here's a question....why didn't the bus driver speed up and slam on the breaks? (Ala do whatever necessary to cause the guy to lose his balance)?

I read somewhere the victim was first stabbed in the neck. I'm not sure there would have been time to save the victim's life. So, that said, trying to stop a man who obviously was oblivious to everything and was wielding a "rambo knife" likely would have caused more harm than good.
