December is going to be fugly as teams try to outsuck one another for the #1 draft pick.

I can't see Carolina trying to be that bad after they just spent the #1 on Newton. Not that they won't get there organically, but I don't see them making that kind of effort.

I can also see Oliver Luck pulling an Archie Manning and keeping his son away from half of the teams on that list.

They were so bad they didn't have to try. Margins of defeat: 17, 17, 30, 34, 15, 18, 19, 16, 23. Their closest loss was in the playoffs (11 to the Bears). The worst playoff team ever in any sport.

That's what I thought when I first saw this on ESPN. They might not have wanted to risk him signing with a team in the division.

Dave is a great guy...knew him well in college. I wouldn't be surprised to see him emerge as a backup in Tampa for a year and then move on somewhere else. His college coach, Steve Logan, is on the staff in Tampa and they're still great friends...and Dave and Freeman are very similar.

I could see this. David Garrard is a big upgrade over Josh Johnson, and certainly he could help Josh Freeman.

If the Panthers didn't have enough faith in Derek Anderson - yeah, yeah ... insert your own joke here - he might be a good fit in Charlotte. But it's obvious Carolina is pushing all its chips to the middle and playing Cam Newton now.

Interesting the manner in which David Garrard won and lost the starting job in Jacksonville were similar. Somewhere, Byron Leftwich isn't the first bit surprised.

If Tampa gets Garrard I wonder if the 49ers will get Josh Johnson. They supposedly were interested in him since he was a QB for Harbaugh in San Diego but Tampa thought he had value as a backup.

Another option could be Miami.

I lumped Carolina in with Cincy--teams that won't try to tank for the no. 1 pick since they already have their "franchise QB" (I put that in quotes b/c I think Newton and Dalton are going to suck) and might get there on merit. Denver will probably just be bad, instead of historically so, but if they were 1-11 in early December I could see Elway wanting to finish dead last just to get Luck.

My money's on the Bengals in this anti-shootout. And then America would totally pull for Luck if he staged an Eli Manning or Elway-like draft refusal.

I don't know if the Jags would have gotten $9 mil worth of performance from Garrard, and I doubt his release will cost the team $9 mil in ticket sales - but I think they could have gotten something out of him in a trade.
Maybe McCown has a better relationship with Gabbert.

But really - the problem the Jags have isn't the $9 mil - it is the rest of the roster. And I know there is a parallel between now and when Leftwich got axed, the difference is Garrard hadn't proven he couldn't lead a team - McCown? Eighth year, nine Tds, 10 Ints.

I'm still trying to figure if the move was Del Rio's attempt to save his job, or show other owners that he's willing to take a hit for their bottom line.

I guess good news for Texans fans.
