Garnett to Celtics talks back on

Both ESPN.com and Foxsports.com are reporting a Kevin Garnett to the Celtics deal is back on the table and could be done within the next 48 hours.

I don't really follow the NBA, but have always liked the Celtics and keep an eyeball on them.

Seems to me, though, that the Celts might be giving up too much (Al Jefferson, who looks like a future star) to get Garnett. One report has the Celtics giving up Gerald Green (could be a nice player) and Sebastian Telfair (good riddance) the other has it being Rajon Rondo (not sold on him).

Either way, it seems like Danny Ainge is forgoing the future to win it now, now, now (see: No. 5 pick for an old Ray Allen). So if this deal does goes down, he better: 1. Sign Garnett to an extension (or else risk losing him after 2008); 2. Win it all.

With Pierce, Allen and Garnett Ainge clearly is trying to win it all now. I'm sort of concerned with how much they'd have to give up-Jefferson and Green. Ainge was trying to build for the future, now he's trying to mortgage that future.

From the Boston Herald:

One involved source said the final package will have the Celts sending Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Gerald Green, Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff and a No. 1 pick to Minnesota to acquire Garnett.

Further word is that the Celts and Garnett have reached an agreement in principle on a contract extension.

Seeing Allen over in Boston probably helped sway Garnett's mind. Still, giving up Jefferson, Green and Gomes (not to mention Telfair and an expiring contract in Ratliff). Wow, that's a lot.

Foye could be a stud in this league, while Telfair will be joining Me-bury in Italy in 2 short years.

Ainge has decided to sell out Boston's future just to make himself look a bit better for a season or two.

The Ray Allen deal was complete idiocy from a long-term perspective, and this wouldn't be a whole lot better. It would just mean the Celts being decent instead of awful for a couple seasons and then having to start over again with nothing. Ainge has been a disaster as a GM.

They kind of need to make this move after the Allen trade. You can debate that move, but once they decided not to keep building with young talent, it makes sense to go after it now. If Cleveland could get to the finals with that god-awful supporting cast, you have to think Pierce, Allen, Garnett and whatever else they have left over (seems like they're giving up a lot for Garnett) would be enough to at least get there.

In two-three years they're going to be worse than they were last year, but at least they'll make a run and stop being caught in between rebuilding and trying to win at the same time.

BOSTON (AP) — Kevin Garnett is leaving Minnesota after the Boston Celtics agreed to acquire the All-Star forward in a multiplayer trade with the Timberwolves, a Celtics official told The Associated Press on Monday.

Among the players who could be headed to Minnesota are forward Al Jefferson, guard Sebastian Telfair, swingman Gerald Green and center Theo Ratliff, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been completed. The official also said the Timberwolves would get at least one draft choice.

The teams still had some things to clarify with the players’ contracts, but the official said that would not keep the Celtics from acquiring Garnett, although there could be a change in the players ticketed for the Timberwolves.

There was a chance that a conference call announcing the trade would be held Monday, the official said.

Garnett, 31, has spent all of his 12 NBA seasons with Minnesota. He would get an extension of his contract, which has one year plus an option year remaining, the official said.

The Celtics had tried to get Garnett late last month, but his agent said he didn’t want to go to Boston.

Since then, Boston acquired seven-time All-Star guard Ray Allen from Seattle in a draft day deal. Already with Paul Pierce, the Celtics would become instant contenders in the mediocre Atlantic Division with Garnett, even without promising forward Jefferson.

The Celtics obtained Allen and the 35th pick of the draft for guards Delonte West and Wally Szczerbiak, and forward Jeff Green of Georgetown, whom they drafted with the fifth pick.

he Celtics have won just three playoff series during Pierce’s nine years with them. They still have an NBA-record 16 championships, but none since 1986.

“They have no excuses, this team out there,” Danny Ainge, the executive director of basketball operations, said after Allen was acquired.

Pierce, 29, led the Celtics in scoring last season but played only 47 games because of injury.

Allen, who turns 32 next month, averaged a career-high 26.4 points last season, his 11th, but underwent surgery to remove bone spurs on both ankles that required him to wear protective boots. He is expected to be ready for training camp.

He's probably so happy the Celts are adding someone like KG that the friction he's creating by pulling his pudd so fast is likely to start another round of SoCal wildfires. At the same time, he'll realize that since they traded away his favorite player on that team (Jefferson), that he'll wrap a noose around his neck, so as soon as the deed is done, he'll be out for the count.

I agree. As much as I'm concerned that Ainge is trading away the future, if he's committed to winning now, the deal makes sense.

It only makes sense if they immediately win, and win BIG, next year. Allen and KG are each entering their 13th year in the league, Pierce his 10th, it's now or never b/c the Celts are gonna be awful again in 2-3 years.

And where are the Celts other 9 roster spots gonna come from? Didn't the Allen trade essentially consist of 3 guys (Wally Z, West, and the 5 pick) in exchange for just 1; and preliminary reports indicate this is gonna basically be FIVE guys, Jefferson (a future all star), Green, Telfair, Gomes and Ratleff's rights, in exchange for just 1. After trading away 8 to get 2, just who do the Celts have left other than the three aging stars? Who's gonna be the the point guard entrusted to run this show, Rajon Rondo? Good luck with that.
