FWIW: I thought coverage was fine.
Granted, I did not watch any post-round action, Reed interview or anything.... One of my former sportswriting friends, who is an unabashed Reed fan, was blasting Nantz and the AN crowd for the obvious, biased disappointment that Reed won.

I think your friend is wrong. There is a natural announcing bias in any sport towards the athlete/team that is staging a dramatic rally down the stretch vs. the athlete/team trying to hang on to a shrinking lead. If it'd been Spieth in front and Reed going very low in pursuit he'd have been the beneficiary.

Nantz consistently mars an otherwise enjoyable event. Like Berman and to a lesser degree Costas, his obsessive commentary has creeped from knowledgeable insight toward annoying, syrupy pedantry. When he said that Tiger Woods had last walked the course at Augusta 1052 days ago (or some such ****) my only thought was, wow, some stats gopher was actually charged with determining that number. It was the type of stalker stat that made me cringe.

When you factor in that 3/4ths of the majors and now broadcast by Nantz and Joe Buck it makes muting the TV and putting on PGA Tour radio a serious option.

Exactly. When would one propose Golf.com publish a story about Reed's parents throwing a Masters Watch party while their son was winning the Masters other than the night of the Masters?

Weirdly, I know Golf Digest had a reporter there at the party as well but didn't run something (at least not yet) if you're looking to weigh who does real golf journalism these days and who still does equipment ads wrapped with copy, masquerading as a magazine.

Shipnuck's story was exceptional, as was the follow-up about how it came together. You gotta be connected to get that invite and have the desire to extract yourself from that palatial media center to go cover it. And don't underestimate the latter; the Lords of Augusta didn't just build that place so the writers would be comfortable -- they built it so the writers would be more lazy.

Third year, I was like "This place is somehow both great and ... creepy.

Without ever setting foot anywhere near the course, that's the exact vibe I've gotten over the years. It feels like it has a Stepford quality to it.

He had the biggest story of the tournament. This was an extra examination of one small piece of it. And he did get an answer.

Talked to one writer this week who predicted that in 20 years, you won't be allowed to leave the Media Center, but it will have gourmet food and Lay-z-Boy recliners and interactive screens and a whiskey bar.

You bet your ass I hung around in the players parking lot for an hour after the ceremony to get extra color, though.

Right now a writer can't leave the new press building and walk to the course or the range or anywhere else; you have to take a shuttle. It's really inconvenient if you want to go to the range since the press building is at the far end of it. I guess there could be a liability issue.

Eh, I disagree. It's super fast and takes about 60 seconds. I thought it would be bad, and it's been fine. Because Augusta runs like a fancy BORG, there is always a shuttle waiting, and they will happily drop you at the range. And you can walk if you choose. I did it this week.

You'll have to show me the walking route because I missed that. I would have gladly done that instead of getting dropped off at 1 fairway and then walking back up to the range. The best part of the shuttle ride is that you get to admire all the fancy stonework and landscaping the club did.

You got lucky a Pinkerston missed you with the walking. I was told numerous times it's not an option and politely told to get my ass in the cart.

How new is the "new" press building? Last time I was at Augusta was in 1994 and, if I recall correctly, they were breaking in a new media center then. I was there as the guest of an architect friend whose firm had done the design/build work, so while I wasn't covering the tournament I had what was essentially a press pass. I can't for the life of me remember where it was, though. Is that the new one, or is there now a newer new one?

When I actually covered the tournament, we were in that old quonset hut near No. 1. I was such a big-timer that I rated a seat in the balcony ... complete with the chained-down binoculars to help see the leaderboard!
