Been calling for this since I got pantsed by some drunk fratties while passing Potbelly's on a midnight distance run back in aught-two.

I'm not suggesting they do nothing as far as the binge drinking, dangerous hazing and other criminal behavior but I wonder what this does for enrollment, especially among males from rich families who may tend to donate big bucks to the school their kid goes to? I've seen estimates that 20-25 percent of the students are in Greek life that's no small number. If the Greek life at FSU is non-existent or watered down to merely lame, do these kids to to other colleges?

An already surprisingly liberal Southern flagship state university becomes more liberal?

If the Greek life is a reason to go to a school, you and your parents have ****ed up priorities. I️ went to a southern school where frats were big and I️ joined on. But it sure as **** wasn’t the reason I️ went there. Now what the **** is the matter with my keyboard

Was there some specific incident that drove this decision?
Florida State suspends Greek life following alcohol death

Florida State University indefinitely suspended its fraternities and sororities Monday after the alcohol-related death of a freshman pledge and cocaine charges for another fraternity member.

University President John Thrasher didn't say how long the suspension will last.

"This pause is needed to review and reflect on the loss of a young life and to implement serious changes," Thrasher said. "For this suspension to end, there will need to be a new normal for Greek life on campus. They must participate in that culture."

Florida State is at least the third university this year to suspend Greek life because of alcohol-related tragedies. After the February hazing death of 19-year old Timothy Piazza, Penn State suspended fraternities and sororities from holding social activities during the spring semester. Louisiana State had a one-month suspension and continues to ban alcohol at Greek parties after the hazing death of 18-year old Maxwell Gruver in September.

I’m for banning all fraternities, so this is fine to me.

But the Greeks there don’t cause anywhere near as much mayhem as the football team.

There are myriad fears here. If you shut down the frat bros' clubs, you can forget about getting any donations from them for the foreseeable future. And that is ultimately why they will survive.

I don't know how the rest of you feel, but that looks like a really inspired, high quality post. Well done, CDB!

I think the Greek ideal was once a great concept that got twisted around alcohol and debauchery. No recent development; it's been that way for quite a while. And the result is something that no campus needs anymore.

I was in a house 25 years ago. Big Ten school but one where Greek life was very muted. Only 4 percent. It was pretty laid back.

We visited other schools where Greek life was much more pronounced. Purdue, Illinois, Michigan State. They were pretty extreme on alcohol and their parties weren't for the faint of liver.

I waver on what to do with Greek houses. Some have an awful national reputations. Others are hit and miss - a national rep may be good but you get some assholes at a local chapter who condone everything.

My house certainly wasn't perfect and I don't look back on it with only glory. We were truly "no hazing"' of which I'm always thankful. I did make lifelong friends but they're not best friends.

We also had bad moments but I suppose that was part of growing up. It was all relative at a school where it seemed that everyone battled alcohol and marijuana addiction for a time.

I discovered today the number 6 no longer works on my keyboard. That’ll take me out of half the threads here!
