If we are repulsed by someone saying “You know how they are” when “they” means a minority then it shouldn’t be acceptable here. Maybe all the horrible things we can imagine about him and his family are true. But we don’t know that yet and nothing is gained by generalizing.

So far all we know that this officer did was have a son who (apparently) went on a shooting spree as an adult. Dots aren’t connected, at least not yet.
