Based on the return of Rick Reilly, I figured it would be fun to exchange favorite columnists to read. National, local, dead, alive, blogger, whatever...

I love Jim Murray and Shirley Povich. I know that probably makes me sound old.

There's gotta be about 1,000 threads already created for this topic. I'm too lazy to find them, though.

What about the lower-case columnists? They work just as hard.

Sorry, the last list I saw was a few years back.
Look harder, young paduan: Best national columnists?

Seeking out the earlier threads wouldn't be a bad thing, either. Some of those mentioned might have changed addresses since then, but they didn't forget how to write. And if you enjoy reading work from true craftsmen such as Murray and Povich, do whatever you must to get your hands on a copy of "What A Time It Was".

John Kelso, Austin American-Statesman
Terrence Moore, AJC
Buck Harvey, SA Express-News

Just to name a few.

Berry Tramel, Oklahoman.

He's the best in the geographic area between the Kansas City Star and the Dallas Morning News -- and his kingdom may actually go farther south than that.

harvey araton, ny times
mike vaccaro, ny post

papers at both ends of the spectrum. vac's waaaay too thoughtful for that rag.

He's the only reason I read the Post, although I shamelessly admit to giggling at most of the headlines.

I agree with some of the names on the other national columnists thread:

Pat Forde, or anyone at ESPN covering football.
Dennis Dodd- But sometimes only to see the crazy things he writes.
Nothing from FoxSports
Mike Rosenberg
Bob Ryan

Jim Murray — no one close. Humor is tough. He did it will style, which twice as hard

Red Smith — Concise. No one said more in 600 words.

Rick Reilly — Versatile, clever, relevant.
