Yes, "Death Magnetic" is the name of the new Metallica album.

Sigh. Like a bunch of 40-somethings trying to be cool. I'll pick it up, and there will likely be a song or two I dig. And you bet I'll see the concert this fall.

But "death magnetic"? Honestly, at least ACT like you still care about what goes on in the studio.

From WIKI:
Death Magnetic is the ninth studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica. It is scheduled for release in September 2008 by Warner Bros. Records. The album will be the band's first to feature current bassist Robert Trujillo and the first to be produced by Rick Rubin. It will also be their first studio album released through Warner Bros. Records, although they still remain with Warner Music Group, which owns their previous label, Elektra Records.

The album's style has been described as more progressive and, at times, melodic, as it features many guitar solos. It has been referred to as the "missing link" between 1988's ...And Justice for All and 1991's Metallica. The album will be Metallica's first studio album to be released since 2003's St. Anger.

Did Trujillo not play on St. Anger?

I love Metallica, have most of their albums, but St. Anger SUCKED. This new one hopefully will go back to what Metallica was.

Great thread title, BTW. :D

Six tracks out of the ten track album were revealed to members of the UK music press at a listening party on June 4, 2008, where it was confirmed that there are two epic eight minute songs present on the album, one possibly called "Flamingo", and another called "Die Hard".

Eight-minute songs!?! When did Metallica become a jam band?

Methinks you need to check out Master Of Puppets. I doubt there's a song under four minutes on that entire album. Several clock in over six minutes.

Yeah, but not eight minutes. That's Phish-esque.

Three songs on Master Of Puppets weigh in at over eight minutes (with NO songs under five minutes). Two songs on ... And Justice For All are over nine minutes (again ... no songs under five minutes). One song on Ride The Lightning is over eight, with four more over five minutes.

If anything, long songs are a return to form for Metallica.

Most of those songs have 2 minute guitar solos. Hopefully it is a return to form.

If done correctly, you don't even notice eight minutes on a good Metallica song. Sadly, they died (in my eyes) after the Black Album. But some of the early stuff, Master of Puppets, Disposable Heroes, Sanitarium, I still bring to the gym.

I heard they were considering Shark Sandwich, but it was already taken.

I <3 metal geeks.

Track listing on band's official Web site:

That Was Just Your Life
The End Of The Line
Broken, Beat & Scarred
The Day That Never Comes
All Nightmare Long
Cyanide
The Unforgiven III
The Judas Kiss
Suicide & Redemption
My Apocalypse

Wow. 12-year-old metal fans, rejoice. With Rick Rubin as producer, apparently they were influenced to try to turn into a wannabe 40-something Slayer.

And "The Unforgiven III"? Just stop it.

EDIT: Watching the youtube videos of "The New Song" and "The other new song" from two years ago . . . those still don't sound too bad. But we shall see how they sound on CD.
