**** Cheney Dead

After Bush’s reign, especially with the Iraq debacle, the Dems should have had the presidency and both houses of Congress for 20 years. Instead, Dems kept being afraid of attacking the past.
Had the 2000 election been fairly contested in Florida, the Dems would have had the White House at least through 2004. And I bet Gore would have been re-elected, such is the power of incumbency.

A high school friend -- his name is Bob Wells -- joined the Navy and rose to the rank of Captain. Yeah, he was the captain of a destroyer. After he retired, he was appointed to be the Navy advisor to the Vice President. Here is his Facebook post:

Rest in Peace Vice President **** Cheney whom I served as National Security Special Advisor (Defense Policy and Africa) from 2003-07. Your lessons of caring for our armed forces....and remaining vigilant against national and homeland security challenges remain with me. God bless Lynne, Liz and Mary.

It struck me how we are now at a time when there are few Republicans who operated in a time before Fox News, and it has absolutely changed their politics. Cheney wasn't a screamer, wasn't prone to hyperbole. He knew where the levels of power were in Washington DC and manipulated them expertly. (I mean leaking stuff to the NY Times then quoting the story he leaked on Meet The Press to back up his argument? Genius. This is not praise. Just an awareness that you have a lot of screamers on TV who say a lot and loudly, but aren't as effective in getting what they want done as Cheney was.

Cheney held what are currently standard, mainstream Democratic positions on foreign policy.

Hardly. The Democrats, given the opportunity to clean up Wall Street after the 2008 crisis, instead struck a bargain with corporate America on an identity politics agenda that has since backfired.

“Caring for our armed forces” by sending them to die in a war drummed up to avenge an assassination attempt on the father of Cheney’s boss is a helluva disconnect, Bob Wells.

I agree that they should have been much harsher on Wall Street and talked about kitchen tables more.

That said, the Republicans are the ones who got mad about “identity politics” because a black man had the audacity to become president and gay people wanted to get legally married.

All politics are identity politics. ... because trying to get elected while somehow not identifying with your constituents would be a stupid strategy.

W's retreat and cowardice of the last decade is outrageous. It only means he must support it.

**** him. He was the worst president before Trump and got away with it.

I celebrated 1/20/09 as much as anyone, but I would vote for that ******* in the next 10 general elections if it meant we avoided this **** show.

If only Jeb! got elected…

Oh, Republicans didn't mind identity politics that much either - it was a handy bait and switch - until there was suddenly an electoral advantage to rejecting it. Which they did for a bit - until now, when they're really leaning into it.

And, to be clear, there are people for whom identity, whatever it may be, is a top voting issue. I don't think it's any particular way to live myself, but I acknowledge it.

That's just an awful pitch to a voting populace. It's divisive and hurtful and kind of beside the point.

First, it burned the Democrats. Now, it's going to burn the Republicans, who have comically leaned into the culture war all while ignoring a hideous economy that's not getting better for middle class Americans.

It's not like Wall Street was in good shape when Obama was sworn, it was like the economy had a stroke. The billionaires and millionaires were going to be fine regardless, the problem was getting the economy on its feet for the average Americans, people hoping their retirement funds would still be there, that credit markets would unfreeze so people could buy cars, buy homes, businesses order goods.
Now if they just gave Wall Street similar terms as they do college students who get through school on loans, maybe that would have worked.

If Cheney's daughter would have been straight, he wouldn't have given a rat's ass about gay rights. He didn't care one bit until his own family was impacted.

We've seen Republican self-interest writ large with this year's demonstrations of FAFO.

Chaney was asked if he ever contacted the family from where he received his heart transplant. “No.”

To be fair, not every family wants to hear from organ recipients and vice versa. There are compelling reasons for this.
