FIFA: What? Us? Noooo, of course not.

None of these monstrous events ever really achieve what they’re hyped to do. Always a money pit.

I have told several Houstonians, non-sports types, that this World Cup thing was a huge boondoggle meant to enrich only one entity -- FIFA. They looked at me like I was crazy. Don't buy the hype, Elmer & Mildred, they're coming for your pocketbook every single time.

Much of what has been reported here in Toronto seems to imply that bars, restaurants and hotels didn't see anywhere near the kind of business they expected. (I work in downtown Toronto and there was very little sense it was here except on game days when you'd see some fans in jerseys at Union Station.) And the Fan Fest was slammed for high prices, weird hours and not paying staff for weeks.
