Bridge collapse in Washington

All the national cable news channels are airing re-runs of earlier programs. If news breaks at 2 pm somewhere, they're great with live coverage. If it breaks after 9 pm ET, they're pretty worthless.

I flipped over several times during breaks in the hockey game and all I saw were replays of Anderson Cooper and Piers Morgan.

Guess it wasn't that big a deal then. I don't think Fox had anything. They can't afford to let Obama off the hook for five ****ing minutes.

If it happens after 10 p.m. ET and west of the Mississippi it doesn't register. If this happened between DC and NY or between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET it would be wall to wall.
I guess what concerns me is that the cable nets don't even keep a skeleton crew around 24 hours that could have an anchor up and throwing to local coverage.

They've scrambled all night to cover this story ... props to the Skagit Valley paper for at least getting some timely photos.

Sunshine Skyway, in Tampa Bay, killed 35 people when it collapsed in 1980 after being struck by a freighter. Cars and a Greyhound bus fell 150 feet to the water.

Not a road bridge, but the Big Bayou collapse in Mobile in 1993 killed 47 on an Amtrak train. Likewise, that bridge collapsed after being hit by a barge.

Wow. Towing a barge at 2:45 a.m., in heavy fog?
I didn't know barges are kept moving after daylight hours.

FWIW, it doesn't sound like this was structural, just a trucker who didn't know his own dimensions.

Nobody pays attention to a bridge until they can't use it anymore. There is already talk that this will finally get a new bridge going between Portland and Vancouver, Wa. which has been stalled by bad design, various opposition by folks that don't want light rail and area residents and businesses impacted by construction.

I hope the I-5 bridge over the Columbia River is structurally sound. That would be a loooooong way to fall if it collapsed.

I had the same hope yesterday when I was driving across it -- and three other bridges in Portland.
