APSE results

No surprise to see my old shop (Augusta, Ga.) in the Top 10 for special sections. They're there every year and for good reason. They start work on it immediately after the most recent one is put out.

Am surprised to see them with an Honorable mention for Daily though, given that the Weekend Sports Editor is a complete fricking boob who alienates his staff with every word he speaks. And for that reason I'm not surprised to see not see them in the Sunday awards spot at all.

That being said, great job by the SE John Boyette and the rest of the people on the desk besides the one mentioned.

We've done nothing yet. With a new SE -- who was part of a victory or two himself at his former paper -- don't know how we'll play it. I'm kind of torn about trumpeting it.

We joked about putting it out on the front page last night after getting some section wins, but ultimately we had nothing this morning. Not sure if there will be something about it eventually, but I don't think so.

I would give anything for the APSE judges to have ranked the big papers 1-38.

I'll admit it. The year I got a second place was the year my boss was a judge. When the results came out I asked him what he judged and he was very vague, said something about major metros and that was it. Since I wrote much better stories that year than the one that won, I have to believe he judged my category.

Don't sell yourself short. Everyone has that tale to tell - about how the awesomest story he ever wrote got shut out, and then he won for something he considered middling. I placed this year in the category I'd have ranked third had I been ranking my chances in the three I entered.

Oh, and I basically had to explain to my editor what APSE is after I placed, so at least I know I won on my merits

Yeah, don't assume anything. I'm in the same boat as Waylon this year, having placed in a category I didn't think was my strongest while some of my "better" work was shut out. And we didn't have anyone in Vegas.

Maybe your boss was very vague about what he judged that year because half the time he was wasted in a casino.

Tom Haudricourt (baseball guy) and Gary D'Amato (golf guy) in game story. Gary also won last year.

Didn't see the names. Haudricourt one of the all-time good guys in this business works his ass off.

Congrats to David Ubben of the Columbia Missourian. He was listed in Explanatory Writing in U 40,000. Considering he's a college kid going up against pros, let's give him the SportsJournalists.com Rookie Of The Year.

Also, being a top 10 secition in the biggest category is like being the world's tallest midget. Dallas Morning News effing sucks and it made the top 10. A weak field of competition.
