SPECIAL SECTION Under 40 judge: Dave Rasbach Bellingham Herald

Winner: TOP 10: Bellingham (Wash.) Herald

im guessing there are some steps taken to make this not shady, like he leaves the room, but how awkward?

"Welp, here's my section...see you guys in a fewww minutes"

congrats to all of the top 10!

i hear there was another shortage of judges, so that could be the reason. wouldn't surprise me.

The Citizen has been a Top 10 daily something like seven of the last eight or eight of the last nine years. Had a nice little streak end last year. The paper has some special section awards from the past and several writing awards through the year's, too.

Even though the paper doesn't shut down until March 21, the Citizen can take some pride in whatever Heath Ledger/posthumous awards it gets in this last hurrah.

Huh. Well that answers my question of 'how??'

What's the over-under on how many plaques KC wins. And will the new rules prevent Jumpin' Joe Posnanski from winning in "game story" again?

It's Casper Star-Tribune, not Star-Telegram.

The new "rules" did not stop me from trying to cherry-pick categories. Again. Although it will surely backfire. Again.

I'm more curious, how many papers entered this year? I know of several that didn't pay dues, because it's just not in the budget. And others had to have said, is this really worth my time given the industry?

FWIW, judges do not get to grade their own divisions.

Now David has been around APSE for a couple of years and may have built up a good rep to score well in the judging, but it's well deserved.

Yeah, why would anyone want to feel good about themselves right now? Better to sit around and mope and hold a big pity party ...

If the Herald entered the special section I think it did, it didn't need Dave's judging to win. It still looks fishy, though.
