I'm doing some freelance work for a nonprofit. They badly need to get their name out there. They have a small budget for advertising/marketing.

The first thing I want is when someone Googles ___ ____ (type of business and town) for their name to come up.

How much does this cost, and how to I do this?!

I know a little about this from a prior job. But I think the link below is a somewhat good article when it comes to managing expectations for small businesses. I would advise, too, against the really cheap SEO consultants. I almost think a business would be better off paying for the widget and managing it themselves. And it's important to spend a lot of time researching the key words that might be utilized in the web queries.

I think that, if you put a text file that has the same color text as the background filled with a bunch of porn terms on your home page, your hits will probably increase.

Now I get why companies bother to do these silly blogs... It's all about seo.

This nonprofit can't afford an seo consultant, but I can see some free ways to move the needle up a bit on the search engines.
