a certain SportsJournalists.com poster is deeply saddened.

"The only time to eat diet food is while you're waiting for the steak to cook."
"Never use water unless you have to! I'm going to use vermouth!"

— Julia Child

Been hearing this for years in culinary circles. Given the job her husband had, not a big surprise. And being the hostess with the mostest is definitely spy-grade stuff.

Edit: And actually, she was a civilian employee of the OSS, which has been known for years. Much ado about nothing.

Hey, I bet Julia could get better secrets with her cooking than Mata Hari could get with, well, you know.

Julia Child should always remain the example against which all other popular chefs are measured.

Julia Child a secret agent.

Chuck Barris a double-secret CIA spy?

Who's next?

No damn wonder she would always tell you to use .007 pounds of salt in everything she made.

Funny. The very thought of Julia Child seducing someone for her country brings Octopussy to mind. Not in a good way either.

No love for spy Sterling Hayden?

"I can no longer sit back and allow Communist infiltration, Communist indoctrination, Communist subversion and the international Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids."

Yes, the shortest way to a man's heart -- and thus his country's secrets -- is through his stomach.

you mean the thought of julia child slinking toward you with a ****-eating grin and a turkey baster doesn't tickle your gizzard just a little bit?

I'm puzzled by the sudden revelation of this. I thought this was common knowledge, since it was mentioned in her obituary.

In fact, if I remember right, we had a "RIP Julia Child" thread and this was pointed out.

Also, Mrs. Birdscribe has been mentioning this in her college history classes for more than a decade.

The college kids who are replacing pink-slipped journos are hearing this for the first time, think it's news.
