A cure for Alzheimer's?

My parents did not live long enough for dementia to surface if it was there. And of their parents only one lived into their '80s. That was my maternal grandmother and she was fine. But her sister, my great aunt, had some form of dementia most likely Alzheimer's.

My dad was the longest-lived member of his family, probably ever going back 200 years, and he had dementia the last year and a bit of his life before dying at age 86. Blessedly he passed before it got really bad. He was just goofy mostly in the final year, which was sad for such a brilliant and hard-working man.

My mom has memory lapses. She's still "present" 100 percent of the time, but we'll talk about things from our childhood, or family members that she cannot place at all. And she's always had a problem with lateness, focus, being on time. But I never realize the ability to keep track of time, gauge how long it might take to complete a task, (let alone the challenges of completing the task when you are older) is something that declines with age. While not Alzheimer's or dementia - it is in the "family" so to speak.

My mom is 83. In the past year, her short-term memory has began to decline. She’s gotten two flu vaccines this fall because she forgot about the first one. She brought over presents on the 20th because she thought we were going to my in-laws before Christmas and staying there - even though we repeatedly said we weren’t leaving until Christmas Day.

She had an MRI on her brain in September and the doc gave her an all clear. So the problems are just age-related.
