At Medinah C.C., just west of Chicago. To lend a hand to his long-hitting-but-not-necessarily-accurate bombers, U.S. captain Davis Love III has had the rough cut to a nonexistent Masters height.

Europe has an edge if you look at top 5 in the world; the U.S. looks good when you expand that to the top 20.

Over/under on the number of times NBC gives us a shot of Michael Jordan, who's a member at Medinah? Let's go with . . . mmmm ... 1,190.

In Las Vegas, the U.S. is a lukewarm -120 favorite. Weather is supposed to be perfect.

Europe to win by something like 16-12. Europe will dominate the foursomes and fourball.

U.S. in a close one like two years ago -- but with better weather.

I love the Ryder Cup more than any event in golf. It's the World Cup of golf, and it's match play. U-S-A!
This is partially why I hate Tiger Woods. His Ryder Cup record sucks. The best golfer in the world (up until a couple of Thanksgivings ago) didn't give a **** about playing his best for his country because he wasn't getting paid.

Unbelievably, there's not one career winning record among the eight U.S. guys on this year's team who have previously played in the Ryder Cup.

From 1995-2010, the U.S. has only won two Cups, 1999 and 2008. Of course the veterans have losing records.

I don't think you can rag on him that much, in singles he's 4-1-1.

Just because they have in the past doesn't mean they will this week.

Obviously, he doesn't play well with others. U.S. captains have tried 10 partners with Tiger. None have really worked except Stricker and maybe Furyk. The rap is that his partners either get too conservative and expect him to make the big shot or big putt, or they try to match his talent and attempt shots not within their skill set.

In that case he should be a great teammate this time, because you'd have to be crazy to expect him to make a putt and his unique skill set has vanished.

Did they talk about Jack this way when he was on the downswing too?

Probably not because Jack's idea of a good time when he was at the top or on the downswing was to go home to his wife and children.

I am old enough to remember that any year when Nicklaus didn't win a major in the '70s brought out a rash of "Is Jack Through?" stories.

Very true. Happens to everyone.

The real difference I have noticed with Tiger this year is putting. His ball-striking is still pretty darn good, but he doesn't make the medium to long range putts with the frequency that he used to.

There is one golfer in the world who has had a better year than him.

By the standards the real world uses, there are at least four. Also he is third in FedEx Cup points, behind Rory and the unstoppable Brandt Snedeker.

Tiger = good golfer. Some weeks, very good. Not an intimidator. And he finished 36th in putting.

Please tell me you don't believe that the if you win a major you have automatically had a better year than someone who has won 3 times and contended more often than not. Is that your real world?

On your second point I agree with you. He will never be who he was, not sure anybody will be but he is still one of the best golfers in the world.

I'm only using Tiger's standard, the one that has been drummed into us since he was a pup. Yes. I think Ernie Els looks on his year with more satisfaction than Tiger does.
