Between the NC State and Phi Slamma Jamma 30 for 30s, I don't ever want to hear an old timer say 'kids can't shoot free throws like they used to,' anymore.
UH went to three straight Final Fours, '82 to '84. In '84, Boston College played the odds as the clock wound down and repeatedly fouled freshman guard Reid Gettys, putting pressure on the baby faced kid, who proceeded to nail ten straight free throws and got the Coogs to the Final Four. The '82 team lost to UNC, largely because team star Rob Williams was out on Bourbon Street till the wee hours the night before the game and played like crap.
I have not seen this 30 for 30 yet, which I will very shortly rectify. I went to Houston and was around for Phi Slamma Jama and the Jack Pardee Run 'n Shoot both. Fun times.
Anders was instant offense off the bench, much like Vinnie the Microwave Johnson was. David Rose was the opposite, he was microwave defense. Guy V would put him into a game against the guy on the other team who had a hot hand, and Rose would be all over him, poking at the ball, slapping, stepping in close, all in his man's face. He'd pick up two or three quick fouls, but he was distracting as hell.
Like many Houston fans, I wince every time the March Madness commercials start, because I know that they will show the montage of dramatic moments that includes Akeem on his hands and knees, pounding the court floor in pain and frustration after Lorenzo Charles came out of nowhere to win it for NC St.
