Sports Journalists Forum – Media, Newsroom & Reporting Talk

I definitely tip my top hat to the Cardinal polo, yachting and fox hunting teams.

Yeah, I know. Treating all sports similarly is like giving Wyoming or North Dakota as many electoral votes as California or Texas.
Or like giving them the same number of Senators.
Flaws in the system:
1) What you said about the equality of sports — whether the sport is fielded by 365 schools or 15.
2) The point structure within each sport, which prioritizes making a tournament over excellence therein. You get 25 for getting in but only 100 for winning it all. Even if you need to win 6 or more games to claim the title.

I have to say, I haven't seen this much discussion of the Learfield Cup (outside of press releases) in a long time

It's the off-season. Not quite ready to talk about the big Tennessee State at Georgia, Furman at Tennessee, North Alabama, Austin Peay at Vanderbilt or Youngstown State at Kentucky matchups that will have the Gameday crew frothing at the mouth.

Well, yes, it is.

I acknowledge not all championships are created equal, in the eyes of the sporting public. But all NCAA championships are championships, no matter the sport.

And the Pac-8/10/12 won more of them than anyone else in sports all across the board, by a wide margin.
This you?

Didn't look. This is a college football thread, so I figured it was CFP. These rating are bogus anyway, since not everyone plays the same number of sports.

Stanford sucked in football, both basketballs and baseball. Yet they are #2?
I can see either argument but you gotta pick a lane!

Next up: Getting the Bunny Ranch on board as a title sponsor for the volleyball tournaments.

The specifics of that deal are embarrassing for the Big 12. I saw somewhere it amounts to $250,000 per surface across about 80 venues/teams.

We need to get Monster's negotiators to Iran, stat.

Is it just me, or does this sales pitch to LSU donors sound like the type of thing you'd hear from someone trying to get you on board with a pyramid scheme?

Nice editing on that invite. It literally says you're invited to an event on Aug. 3 OR Aug. 5. So if I received the invite, I might be compelled to ask, tongue planted firmly in cheek, "When is this blessed event? Have you not decided when you'd like me to show up?"
Is there another state in which the governor injects himself into intercollegiate athletics to this degree? And is this not a tell of sorts?
