2025 PGA Championship (or Rory Invitational at Quail Hollow)

Hope you don't mind a separate thread but PGA is in North Carolina where Rory has won 4 times (when it's been a PGA event) and where JT won his first major.

Rory is on a heater, having won the Masters, Players and Pebble and his track record at Quail Hollow is hard to ignore.

As irritating as I find Bryson (and LIV), I have to respect his record in the past 5-6 majors and believe he'll be right there.

Dark horses (beyond Scottie and Rory):

Morikawa has been in the mix in majors regularly for the past 5 years;
Straka hits it straight and has won twice this year;
Cantley fits the profile of a PGA winner, been playing well, been around a while, needs his major to cap his career;
Aberg bombs it straight and has the game for a major but his putting and short game have been pretty blah this year;
JT won here before and has been really good lately;
How about Hojgaard (Rasmus or Nicolai, the one playing the best :))?

You mean Thursday right? No worries. I have no idea what day it is right now, that's how much I've been on the damn road.

Also, we should definitely have dedicated threads for all majors, so you're good here QT. Need to read up a bit before making any picks, but I'd lean toward someone who has demonstrated success on the closing stretch at Quail Hollow. Read some funky stats where there is a ridiculously stark contrast between the first 14 holes and the last four. I get that it's the Green Mile, but I like to see challenging holes spread throughout the round, not just stacked at the end.

I mean, it's fine. Outside of Pebble and Torrey, not a fan of majors at regular tour stops. Aronimink next year will be different. Love Olympic Club in 2028. Southern Hills was announced today for 2032. Unlike the USGA, which has most of its many repeated sites mostly announced through 2051, PGA is announced through 2032 with 2034 at Frisco.

The Open is only announced through 2027, with St. Andrews getting it every five years, which is what the U.S. Open needs to do with Pebble.

The USGA is big on anchor sites like Pinehurst, Oakmont, and Pebble, where they can put in permanent infrastructure that benefits not only the USGA for U.S. Opens, but also the club in general. They've also promised other USGA championships at these anchor sites, like a U.S. Am at Oakmont, etc.

Agree with MileHigh, Quail is fine. The PGA has its allegiances and they're not all great but not awful. Though Frisco better be good.

PGA tickets come with all-inclusive food and drink (non-alcohol) from on-course concession stands and this year the media can have at it too, just flash the credential. Wait, Quail is awesome!

I'm sure they will be back to Quail and Valhalla in no times. Southern Hills now for a sixth time. Kiawah Island is great. It's still an Eastern/Midwestern event. Only time west of the Central Time Zone from 1999 to 2027 will be to Harding Park -- and they got screwed with COVID in 2020. At least they threw Olympic a couple of bones with a PGA and a Ryder Cup.

Hard to pick against the trio of Rory, Scottie and Bryson. All come in hot.

I know I said I wouldn’t pick JT again. But he’s playing awfully well.

Outside of those guys, I’ll go with Shane Lowry to win.

Though, with so many big names winning this year, I feel like it could be a total surprise long shot. Which happens more often at the PGA than any other major.

As for Hunter Mahan, I’m all for golfers saying anything that isn’t a cookie cutter quote. All the media training makes these guys boring most of the time.

I don’t know enough about Quail to agree or disagree. But it’s a pretty funny quote.

I didn’t look up his history there. But I know there are nice courses I don’t like because I never have played them well.
